If you feel guilty volunteer to work at a charity shop of your choice for an hour or two a week or a month. Worth far more to the charity.

ALso as previously mentioned some of them get commission which comes out of your donation?! It should go to the charity.

I have my own favourites and either volunteer, donate goods or give when I can.

Best suggestion yet and its true, i have donated around 50 days of my time to a charity recycling computers/laptops in the last year. Best of all its good to put on my future references and is good experience for my future chosen profession.

I know it sounds awful... but whenever one of those charity canvassers in town stops me to ask me to set up a direct debit for their charity... I'm so weak... I just can't say no... the problem is I'm so broke I can't afford to be making this kind of commitment.... the best I can do is put a pound or two in when they are collecting around twon.

They always give such genuine reasons why I should give them money... I just can't refuse. I'm already signed up by AICR, Shelter and some charity for families with disabled children.

    What can I doooo???

I know what you mean I feel the same but if they ask me for money, I just say " no thank you, not this time" Politely and with a smile. They are not supposed to rattle a tin or ask for money, I believe. If you can't afford it, say so. I would not be signing up to a DD on the street either, tell them you won't do that. I would be tempted to cancel those that you have signed up to, you can do this at your bank. I prefer to chose which charity I give to.

Philliggi, sorry to correct you, but the correct saying is "THE GIVING of charity begins at home".

For street collectors, there's no rule (unless one has been drawn up recently) saying they shouldn't rattle tins or ask for money, however they should not harrass the public - and check the dictionary definition of harrass to discover the ambiguity of the law here.

Most face to face fundraisers (the direct debit people) get a set hourly wage, it's not a bad wage, but not commission as commission is a big no no in fundraising due to the institute of fundraising's regulations on the ethics of fundraising.

Soolin!! Thats awful, your poor son... and terrible behaviour from the Red Cross. Its only just started happening that past few years (or maybe I've just started noticing it as I'm only 21) but charities seem to have started acting like 'Businesses' almost!!!

Funnily enough I was once offered a job as one of those charity people - it was a company who work as agents for the charity, so they get paid an hourly wage and then benefits such as lunch paid for, freebies etc etc

I don't mind giving to Red Cross.. every now and then I get a letter telling me they are not begging for money and can I just fill the form in to say they can claim Tax relief or something off what I donated :)

if i asked you to post your bank details on here so i could take money from your bank, would you do it, course you wouldnit.
so why would anybody, in their right mind give their bank details to a complete stranger who stops you in the street. the mind boggles at the stupidity of the human race.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I think there is potential for a scam actually, I know the Chuggers are supposed to show us iD when they talk to us but honestly how many of us would know a ereal ID from something photoshopped and laminated.?

Get a few people out there , knock up a few 'vests' with a charity name on them and start collecting personal details from people, name address, bank details and a signature. Yes I know that everyone is protected under a DD guarantee but again if you have signed something I would have thought it might delay you getting your money back if it turned out to be a scam later.

My son has started to get letters from Red Cross now and he won't show them to me but I know they are worrying him. However he is volunteering this summer at a local charity and working there most days after he finishes his (short alas) paid shift at a locol shop so I have told him he shouldn't feel guilty about not donating money .
