Well I'm a lone parent with 2 children and I spend £40 every 6 weeks on food and other household items (washing up liquid, washing powder, loo rolls etc etc) so I think you will eat like the Queen on £60 per month for one!!!

That's less than a pound a day for food and household stuff for 3 people.

How do you do it, black saturn?

I budget £100 a month for two for food.

And depending on if it is 4 or 5 week month I spend £75-£100.

But would love to know how black-saturn does it.

TBH, I don't know. But I manage it somehow  We eat porridge for breakfast or toast. My children have a free school dinner but I usually have a sandwich, 8p noodles or 9p beans on toast then for tea I cook something from scratch or buy one get one free stuff and then most nights we have a pudding cooked from scratch too. It can be done if you put your mind to it.

I'm going to have another look at my food budget. We can afford organic fruit, veg and dairy, but we don't eat meat so I'm sure I could shave some off if I put my mind to it.

Thanks, black saturn, you've got me all fired up about it again, I thought I was doing well...

When I was single I reckon my total shopping spend was £15 or less a week (though I never counted it exactly). I didn't eat particularly well- but if I knew then what I know now (thanks to OS) I could have;).

Nowadays my wife and I probably spend £25-30 a week- and that includes all the overpriced stuff for her faddy diets etc:rolleyes:.

I picked up the best part of 2kg of chicken breasts today from the supermarket for £4 (after they'd been reduced twice;)) and shoved them into the freezer. Our dinner of grilled chicken and potato wedges probably cost about 50p. The rather lovely dinner we had on Saturday night of chicken breast stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon (with mash and frozen veg) probably cost less than a quid. So far the 64p packs of reduced mince I loaded up with from Lidl have made bologneses and chilli-con-carnes which were delectable. Cheap and tasty eating is always out there for the finding.....

Could you post some examples of what you cook for meals and puddings. I think you are truly inspirational. I try every week to lower our shopping bill but still spend around £75 a week (for 2 adults and two children - one a very hungry teenage boy!). With Christmas fast approaching I could do with some tips.
  • Hi

I have cut back from about £100 a week on groceries to about £25. This is for 2 adults and one hungry 10yr dd. Because of dietry needs I often daily have to eat 2 full hot meals, but usually cook a little extra at dinner and have this the next day for lunch etc. I also have to snack alot too  I think we eat very well.

    Breakfasts normally made up of:

Cereal, porridge, toast, eggs (scrambelled, fried, poached), bacon butties, every other week do a full english (bacon, sausage, hash brown, egg, beans, mushrooms, toast)yogurts, fruit juice

    Lunches often things like:

Cooked meal from night before for me normally. OH has things like jacket spud & filing of cheese/beans/tuna/chilli/curry etc, beans/egg/spagetti on toast, sarnies-normally cheese/ham/tuna etc, raviolli and toast, soup and bread, HM Pizza-his fav ATM.

    Dinners often things like:

Roasts, shepards pie, toad in hole, chilli con carne, spagbol, sausage & mash, HM lasagna, HM pie, fish, HM curry & rice, egg, beans & chips, burgers occasionally

All meals served with veg and spuds/ric/pasta (mash/roast/boiled/chips). Rarely have a pud but there are always yogurts in fridge. Always have fresh fruit and juice, tinned rice pudding etc. I have to eat constantly so always have packets of biscuits/crisps in but buy the basic ranges.

I used to be an M&S food snob and have switched to basic ranges and cook everything from scratch-no ready meals. I buy decent bread but get OH to go to Asda later in the evening and you can often buy the loaves of Warburtons reduced to 20p from £1 and milk for 15p-so we buy large amounts and freeze and these last for the month. I buy frozen meat (lamb joints/lamb chops/chickens/etc)when on special and Asda frozen meat items are excellent value. No take aways either-or rarely as a treat.

I buy all wash powder, fabric conditioner, coffee, teabags, loo rolls and kitchen rolls at Makros on their deals-so would say that maximum per week we spend on everything is about £30 a week.

Please PM me if you need any help-i will try my best..lol.
