Can anyone help with a redundancy and notice question please?

Just wondering whether anyone can help me please. I've been made redundant from my job of fifteen years. Very upset but you know that's life I suppose. I have my redundancy money and the firm have indicated they do not require me to work out any notice, and they are going to pay me in lieu of notice, and for unused holiday etc. My employment was officially terminated on the 11 July 2008. I now have another job which I am due to start on the 21 July 2008 with another firm very close to my last. I had no restrictions in my contract about working for rivals so that's fine. Just wondered whether it is ok for me to start work during the notice period. My own feelings are that as the firm have decided not to require me to work out the notice and to just pay me in lieu of that then my employment is officially terminated and I am free to commence work for another employer. Can anyone clarify that for me please? I have trawled round the net looking for a black and white answer but cannot seem to find one. Apologies this is all in one block and not in paragraphs but the damn computer doesn't seem to recognise the enter button today! Thanks you.

As far as I am aware there is nothing to stop you starting a new job during your notice period. There may be tax implications as you are being paid twice for the same weeks (ie while working and earning and having been paid in lieu) Just give your new employer your P45 and they will sort the tax out.
I presume that you know that redundancy pay is not taxable.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Annie is right
You have been paid in lieu of notice so your obligations to the company ended on July 11th.
good luck in your new job!0
