Can't access Secure websites

I am hoping that somebody can help me.

Up until recently all has been well but now my Laptop cannot access any Secure sites.

I have checked the advanced options in Internet options and have cleared cookies etc but still cannot get anywhere.

I have also tried running Updates but cannot get them to run.

I have checked my firewall and as far as I can see it seams fiane.

I am running the Laptop via a wireless link and have AVG installed.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

    Hi mjenn5

i know of a friend that had a similair issue recently & he got round the prob by using firefox browser for https.

    but to resolve your issue:
    can you confirm the following

-which version O/S are you running ?
-are you running any adaware blockers ( google toolbar /xp sp2 popup blocker /adaware ) -if yes have u tried disabling these as a test
-are you running any local software firewall software ? if yes have u tried disabling these as a test
    - do you connect directly to the Internet or do you browse through a Proxy ?
    - lastly could you be infected with malware ? can u try install adaware or "search & detroy"

if you need more detailed indtuctions i wil be happy to pist a full step by step breakdown.

    let me know

Well thanks for your tips but I am still no further forward.

I have tried to use firefox but can't even get it to connect.

The Laptop is Windows XP and I have tried disabling everything and tried a system restore back to a previous point.

The most recent thing I have done is upgrade Msn messenger to 7.5.

I connect to the internet through a wireless router connected to my PC and I thing this is where my problem lies somewhere.

I had problems about a month ago where I lost the PC off my network places but managed to get it another way by doing a search for computers on the network but now it seams I can't find it that way either though I can still connect to the internet.

I have managed to run Adaware and it found and got rid of some issues. I tried to run Search and Destroy but it won't run until I update it and I cannot get it to connect to update.

I also ran Hyjack this and addressed those issues but still the problem remains.

Any help would be much appreciated.

On the Laptop there is the windows firewall. The Netgear wireless point has its firewall.

The other things I have installed are Avg 7 and Spyware Doctor. I did have Norton but it is out of date now so I use AVG.

So no software firewall then, like Sygate for example as AVG is antivirus
and Spyware Doctor is for Adware and scumware so on and so forth
I just wandered as Zonealarm has some issues with Internet Connection Sharing
but I dont think this is the problem, In all honesty I would remove Norton
if its out of date as youve got AVG anyway, Post what version of Norton
and we can post back removal instructions.

    lets try this

open the command prompt Start, run, cmd)

    type te following : telnet https://www.gmail.com 443

    and advise what you see...

i get a black screen , basically meaning that i can connect to the gmail server on the ssl port.

this test will confirm whether its a IE issue or a FW/Port blocking issue

    Hello

Well I have now tried the run - cmd telnet www.gmail.com 443 and the reply comes up as
connecting to www.gmail.com...could not open connection to the host, on port 443: connect failed

    What does this mean.
