Does an Orthodontist file teeth?

I am thinking about getting my teeth straightened as I have always been very self conscious about them. I have been looking on the forum at the posts about the cost etc. However, the other thing I would like done (if this is possible) is to have my front teeth filed down as they are longer then the others. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so would an Orthodontist do this too? Also does and Orthodontist whiten teeth or would my dentist do this?

Altering the shape of teeth can be done so long as it's not too much tooth that has to come off. It would usually be your general dentist who would do this, but it would probably be better to have the orthodontics first, as your teeth might well look more in proportion when they are straighter.

Same with the whitening - your general dentist will do it, but it would be best done after orthodontics.

Tell your general dentist of the things you want beforehand though, so that he can plan the best time for all the aspects in consultation with the orthodontist.

Thanks for the info toothsmith. I suppose it makes sense to do it that way round. I have called my dentist and the Orthodontist has a waiting list. Guess that gives me a chance to start saving up for my perfect smile. Who needs this seasons (and the next 2 years) best frocks when you can have one of these.

actually, have another query...

Would the orthodontist I am waiting for is NHS charge the same as a private orthodontist as it is private work? or would they be a little cheaper?

If the cost is the same I might search around for others.

You can usually only see the orthodontist as an NHS patient if you qualify under their criteria. Otherwise it will be private. The NHS criteria are usually only available to under 16 year old with a severe enough malocclusion (wonkey teeth).

All orthodontists are essentailly private, and they are contracted by the NHS to do NHS work. Obviously get a recommendation from friends or your dentist first.

Prices will vary between orthodontic private work as it does between dental private work. Tha fact that they do NHS orthodontics is not an indication of their abilities
