Bankruptcy and emmigration

Hi all

I am still not sure yet whether BR is the right option for me, but do any of you out there know what impact it might have on emigration. We are planning to emigrate to SA in a couple of years' time (OH is South African). How can I find out whether they might refuse me entry?

Thanks

Make anonymous enquiries with the South African embassy or look on their website.

You'll have to check with the SA embassy, all countries have different criteria. Someone recently checked with the Australian embassy and was told it would be fine.

Are you and OH married, if so I would have thought there would be ways around it with sponsored visas etc.,

Thanks both - Peachyprice we were married in SA last December, but it's a same sex marriage and we have not registered it here. So, in answer to your question, I suppose the short answer is 'yes'.

I should think that would give you a good enough case for a visa, without even having to go into your financial back ground.

But do check with the embassy first!

    Hi SuzySu,
Check with the embassy, then check again, and again. You'll see from reading the threads here that many people have been told one thing to do with bankruptcy and then been told something completely different, whether it's to do with jobs or insurance or bank accounts or housing. If you can't find anything concrete about immigration on the embassy website, it's best to ask as many people as possible to try and get a feel for what the actual answer is.
    Good luck.

I don't think marriage automatically gives you the right to immigrate (I'm foreign myself and I still had to go through all the channels to move here and my kids were born here too!). Best to sort all this out before you think of moving. If you got married there and they recognise same sex marriages then I would think that is a bonus for immigrating and also that your partner is SA should help.

If you are not planning on going for a couple of years then you will already be discharged and you can honestly say you are not bankrupt.

Let us know what you find our via the website etc. as it would be interesting to know.

    Good luck!

Thanks all for taking the time to reply. I am trying to avoid BR at all costs as, provided our buyers stop pi$$ing around trying to beat us down for the sake of £200 then we should be ok. It's only if they pull out that we will be in the doo doo.

I just wondered as someone mentioned BR as a possible solution. I think even if the website says it would not matter now, this might change in a couple of years.

There are a couple of handy websites (expat brits and britishexpats, I think - original names!) which have special sections and forums about all this kind of thing, divided by countries.

I know that with many countries nowadays, it isn't an issue.
