I've done some really good second (and third, etc) jobs in my time.......£40 an hour for helping a solicitor catch up with his accounts for example.....:D And some really back breaking crappy jobs at less than the minimum wage.....

.....but the end result is always the same....extra money when I needed it.

I pride myself (and OH too) on the fact that we are not afraid of hard work and long hours - when we have paid off our debts and are able to save for the things we want, we will have earned every penny of it.....and that feels good.

Well I'm currently surfing before going off to my 2nd job - working in a bingo hall.

Yes I earn the minimum wage, yes I get taxed at basic rate on it all but I know I'm earning money that will pay off the debts that much faster than if I sat around wondering how I was going to pay them off.

What is nice is that I get paid weekly which means that I can chip away at the debt weekly which means that I pay less interest.

And more to the point I've met some lovely people that I wouldn't have met otherwise!

If you are going to earn very little in both jobs the tax office will allow you to share your personal allowance between the two. (I had a Saturday job in a newsagent and a nightshift at the motorway service station while I was at uni, neither took me up to the personal allowance threshold)

And bar work seems a brilliant solution, you get paid and it's quite social :D
Waitressing gives better tips though. :D

I used to deliver pizzas in the evenings and at weekends. I actually really enjoyed it. They supplied the car and petrol and off I went! Did it for 5 years and I got to know my local town, met some great people and my tips each night were often more than my weekly wage and I got free food, so it was well worth doing! I paid basic rate tax and got paid the minimum wage but the tips made it worth it. I'm amazed at how generous people are!

I've also worked 5 nights a week, 2 hours a night as an office cleaner. Got paid the minimum wage and hated every minute of it but I stuck it out for a couple of years as it was extra money (basically paid my petrol every week). As they liked me they made me evening supervisor but little extra money and more damned work for some reason! But they said they would give me a good reference if I ever needed one.

However, I've been with my full time job over 10 years so I guess I will get a decent reference anyway but it's nice to know they will help if I need them.

    Hi All,

I currently have a lot of debt and have been considering getting a job to do a few evenings a week. The problem I have is that how much second job tax  you get taken from you so therefore is it worth working my hands to the bone to only end up with £40 extra a week? i really want to start making progress on getting rid of my debt but is there a better way to make money in my spare time?

hi there - depends on the job and how much you earn ofcourse ;)

i privately tutor and get about £40 extra a week - trust me - it pays our food or petrol each week - but weigh up for yourself - im glad i took on the extra hours though - it is noticable;)
