Are me and my co-workers being conned

Not sure if this is the correct part of the forums to post this, or even if it is the sort of question I can ask. But here goes.
The company I work for runs a benifits club that people who want to join pay in certain amount of money each week and the company pay so much, i'ts up to you how much you pay in, to a limit.
Club members get a BUPA health plan, the more you pay in the more you benift from BUPA. You also get money off from some high street store, holidays and lots of other stuff. Also when you retire from work they give you £1000, well thats what they told us when we joined, and that at the time was correct. Now at the start of this year they changed the rules. They now say to claim your £1000 on retirement you must have been a member for five years and members who joined before this new rule have to start from fresh on the new rules even though they have been paying in for quite a few year before the new ruling. Can they do this?
They didn't even wright to members to tell of the new ruling, just one notice on a notice board.

It depends on the scheme terms and conditions.

I don't remember seeing an T & C's. All I know is a rep from our company that runs the benefits club told us what it was all about and we filled a form in, mainly for the BUPA side of it, picked the level you wanted and the money is taken from your weekly wage..
