Default Notice Query

Hi,

I have recently acquired my credit report and unfortunately have discovered a default notice issued 3 years ago from Orange Mobile company - I did not know that my final bill had not been settled but after much investigation it appears I did not settle my last bill of approx £200 - the amount owing is now 2k!!

My question is this - I cannot afford to pay this amount -if I leave the default there will it fall off my credit report in 3 years time and leave me with a clear report? I had wanted to apply for a mortgage next year and am really worried about how this will effect my chances of getting a mortgage and the rate.

Also- I have read that even after 6 years it is difficult to get default notices removed still- is this true? Or do the credit agencies remove them automatically?

Thanks for your help

Ashes

please don't quote me on this but I am sure that a default notice only drops off 6 years after it has been satisfied, so it will stay on until you have paid it and then 6 years after that

regarding your mortgage you should still be able to get one but you may be paying higher interest, have you never had any communication from Orange regarding the debt though? it seems odd they have issued a default without you knowing and allowed this debt to increase without going for a ccj to get their money back?

I have moved flat so have not received any correspondence from Orange - on my credit file I cannot see "default" but I just presumed it had become a defualt as I had missed 3 payments (I thought this was the criteria)

Do you think if it has not defaulted as they have not contacted me directly?

If I contacted them and settled do you think this would sort out the report?

    Thanks

Does anyone out there know how easy default notices are to clear once they have expired? Do they automatically drop off?

I think they automatically "drop off" from date of issue as said before, however if you do not pay, and the company still chases you they could apply for a CCJ which will affect your credit report far more than a default.

    (i think!)
