Panic time, OH JSA soon stops

Its panic time.....my OH JSA will stop on the 6th August, so he has 3 weeks and 3 days to find a job, doesn't look promising when he's been job hunting since the 4th Feb.

A lot of people on here said 6mths was plenty of time to find a job and that he should find one in that amount of time. I thought that as well, but interview after interview, nothing.

He's registered with temp agencies and only one job came up, mean't to be on going, it lasted 1 day.

I am soooo scared its not funny. His parents currently gives us about £200 a mth to help us basically 'get by', we don't take it off them to spend gallore, it literally helps us break even. But from the 6th Aug, with no JSA that means where down £240  .

He's already been told he cannot get any other kind of benefit. From Monday he's doing catalogue drop off he's so desperate, our only chance is if that nets him £60 a week, then where ok, but if it doesn't, my god i don't know what will happen.

All kinds of thoughts are going through my mind, missing mortgage or council tax just to have money to get food, repossession of the house, being homeless.

Im already working through my 6 weeks summer holidays from my school job, it gets me down though. I've worked and worked for 6mths and had no treat for myself, i am trying to support 2 people, keep a house over our heads, make sure the pets get food, cannot go out with friends. I literally hate the weekends.

((((big sign)))) this is not the life i thought id have at 26.....

Can you rent a room out?
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!
  • No one seems to want him, at 1st he was aiming high, you know full time job 40 hours a week etc. Then as time went on he realised he needed to apply for anything and has been, but just nothing.

He's taking a CV in tomorrow into Aldi as we were at the store today and they had a billboard up, £9 a hr for store assistants, so he went and asked for an application form and they just want a CV and cover letter.

If he can't get a job with them, then whats wrong with him????? Just no one seems to want him, like i said, even the little hours.

No more stuff left to put on ebay, we did that in the 1st coming mths, we literally just have essentials now. So def no car boot either.

Cannot rent out a room, we live in a very tiny 2 bed flat. So tiny in our spare room is the pc desk and the fridge/freezer as the kitchen is like a dolls house.

Have you tried signing up to the daily click sites. It's not much, but it does bring in a trickle that will pay for Xmas i.e. no last minute panic.

Has he looked inot delivering the local papers? Our local freebie one is always after delivery people. Don't forget the power of word-of-mouth - ask your mates if they know anywhere hiring.

Good luck hun, try not to get yourself in a tizzy.
This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!

Can you not get anything after because your income is too high? Can you not get housing benefit or working tax credits?

  • So sorry that your in the situation. Why does his JSA run out? My mum is on it and i think its just always there til you find a job? The only things i can think of is just try to be frugal in the food shopping. basics foods, use left overs. Try call centres and control rooms, i got my job that way. The emergency control rooms are great pennies and overtime always there. Any freebies take them. Make things for the kids and presents for people. Explain to them be honest about your situation they might be able to help

    Best of luck

  • Thanks so much for the replies, everyone is trying to be so helpful.

    To answer some q's:

I don't know much about daily clicks, so will spend sometime findind out. To be honest if they money isn't available for bday pressies or when it comes to xmas we'll just go without. For friends this yr (they know our situation) i've just bought them a lotto ticket as a bday gift, my Mums bday is soon (im a aussie) and she knows i cannot afford to send her a pressie.

Delivering local paper is not an option, they already have someone (we live in a village), but i like i said in my orginal post, he starts delivering a catalogue on Monday.

Yes im income is too high (£15,000). We applied in the beginning for all benefits we'd possibly be entitled to and i earn £30 a mth over the threshold.

His JSA runs out because at 1st everyone claims contribution based, which you get if you've paid enough national insurance, but you only get it for 6mths, then at which you'd have to apply for JSA income based, but i earn too much for him to get that.

We already scrimp and save on food shopping, we eat absolute crap to be honest, out of tins etc, you name it. Basically his JSA (£240 a mth) helps meet the bills, my monthly take home does not cover everything.

So really his parents are paying for our food shopping as they give us £200 a mth, so we spend £50 a week on food shopping/petrol for me for work.

Thats why i am worried as at the min we get £440 extra a mth (£240 JSA + £200 off his parents). The £240 goes together with my wage to meet all the bills and we use the £200 a mth to live off. IF his parents still can afford to give us £200 a mth, that will go towards bills, but be £40 short and then we have £0 for food/petrol.

Thats why i am scared, cos bills we not beable to be paid.

We don't have any kids, thank goodness, the way things are we'll never afford a family.
