If you tell them they might keep you on SVR and will not offer a new deal unless your income improves. Its crazy and mean, but that is what they call treating customers fairly.

So would you suggest the OP doesn't tell them? I can't recall if Halifax ever ask me about my job when I get a new deal from them.

Good luck sorting it all out, and good luck with finding a new job.

Well. OP needs to decide for himself. But also needs to ensure he can afford the mortgage. If on SVR he can sell without penalty if he needed to.

But anyone with half a brain and 2 decent hands can get a job so if he has a "can do" attitude and can think outside the box, the redundancy might have been positive for him.

OP what kind of work did/do you do?

Thank you for asking. I'm a Mac Artist, i.e. sort of graphic design but without the qualifications and snotty attitude.

I'm not afraid of taking any job, did it the last time I was made redundant by being a delivery driver for ASDA then moved onto Insurance work within the AA gaining my Chartered Institute of Insurers quals and FSA training.

But ideally I'd love to stay in design work, been doing it for 15 years.

Hell, I've worked all my life and worked hard for what I have. Losing it all is a no no.

    Thanks for the swift reply

So, in your opinion, should we contact the credit card people and tell them the situation? I hate the idea of being unable to pay the bills as I've worked since leaving school at age 16 and not missed any payments on anything I've bought, etc.

You only need to contact the credit card people if you really think you are not going to be able to afford the minimum monthly payment. As you are already on 0% interest then they would only perhaps have offered to freeze the interest - which won't currently apply to you.

Have look at the whole picture regarding your finances.

Make a list of all your current income and and another for expenditure.

There will be things you can cut from the expenditure list - and other thinngs you can shuffle at bit. i.e car insurance - some firms will let you pay it monthly although over the year this can work out more expensive - however right now it is about being able to afford it and keep the car on the road so monthly payments might be a good option until you are again working.

Ditto for other insurance i.e house insurance. See what your current firms will offer you for monthly payments and if they get difficult start shopping around to move to another company. You may save money anyway by switching.(Loads of info on this at MSE in the insurance forums).

Also look at switching your utilities and possibly going over to monthly direct debit - hence no big bills.

MSE is full of lots of other moneysaving info - right now you need to get your monthly outgoings down to as little as possible.

Right, thanks to all for the great advice, I'm going to spend the time sifting through the net for better deals, switching insurances, cutting costs and whatever else I can get going.

Today I saved £480 on my home insurance going from Paymentshield (RA)to Sheilas Wheels (HalifaX & BOS).

I have not claimed on my B&C ever! and yet my cover went up and up. So my patience was broken. I asked for them to match a deal from L&G but they refused and I then found Sheilas which is even cheaper than going direct to Halifax or BOS. Plus it is exactly the same cover!

The world has gone totally crazy!
