Lapsed pension/What does this letter mean?

Options
Hi there
Just a question I have about a lapsed pension from 1999/2000 I payed into it for approx 2 years. The reason I stopped paying is because I was made redundant.
I enquired freely through the Pensions scheme they found the details and I was given an address to write to ...here is the reply below - (written exactly word for word aside from the phone no). I really don't know what this means and would like to know if this is a general 'fobbing' off as they don't have the details? Thanks in advance if anyone can give me any advice on this matter.

Dear XXXXXXX
Thank you for asking for information about your plan. We're unable to provide you with these details because when you stopped making payments we continued to make a monthly deduction from the units, while investing the remainder. Unfortunately, the effect of these continuing deductions has meant that the plan no longer has any units remaining and it has lapsed without value. This was effect from February 2007.

If you have any questions about this information or would like more details, please call us on xxxx xxx xxxx quoting the plan number- we'll be happy to help. We may record or monitor calls to improve our service.

Many old style pensions (going back to pre 2001) front loaded the charges in the first 2 years. Charges also tended to be higher in the past (mainly due to higher inflation boom/bust economy). So, if the contributions didnt go past the charging period it was quite common for a pension to lapse without value.

Modern mono charged pensions dont do that but that doesnt help you (unless you are starting a new one or someone else is reading who may have a pre 2001 pension that they really ought to get reviewed and possibly switched).
