for gods sake, don't use maxtor,
    THEY'RE CRAP
use them in work and of around 3000 or so we use in a year within products, of the maxtors we get a 20-30% failiure rate within a year

they're OK if you keep them VERY COOL,

go for seagates, they're pretty good (1-2% failiure so far), but i've noticed they've moved production to china and changed the design a little recently, so have to keep an eye on that

I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

Was just a hint, you have to make own mind up in the end, but here I like to think we help each other to make the right choice.

Their P&P is a bit steep though. £7 for a bit of bubblewrap and a Citylink plastic bag.

 That's a pretty worrying statistic. I guess I've been lucky in the past with them then. It's pretty odd, as I've seen them reccommended by people that ought to know what they are talking about. There was even a thread not so long ago here in the techie board. I guess I'll have to bear the above in mind when I next think of upgrading.

i used work as a computer tech and they used to be the best, but since a few years ago quality has dropped. NOW i would'nt touch it unless i got one free, even then i would still be in two minds, as i download a lot of stuff, and need reliability, not customer support and RMA numbers.

I got a western digital 250gb ide hdd from aldi with 3 yr warranty for 59 squid the other week. I build a few comps for friends and for work and have never had a single problem with wd. They are in a tevion box in Aldi store when in stock. I subscribed to the aldi email notification service so I always know whats coming up.
