Do banks credit score new employees?

Partner has just graduated, considered applying for customer service job at Royal Bank Of Scotland.
Her credit record is very poor (lots of debt collection agencies acquired through getting in a pickle with two degrees, but being paid off at £1 a month mostly). She also still owes Natwest some money through a debt collection agency.
My questions are:
* Do banks credit score employees? Or is just an identity check?
* Is it worse that she has a debt to Natwest (as they merged with RBS)?
* Is there any point in her applying for this job?
Any info much appreciated....!

Financial institutions like banks will carry out a credit check and some make it clear at the outset that any employment offer is subject to a satisfactory credit check.
It may vary bank to bank but depending on the severity of the credit check someone may be able to overide if a strong candidate.
It would be worth a quick phone call to their HR department asking wwht this banks policy is on credit checks on potential employees? - nothing to lose?0 -
Well their website says:
We take every precaution to protect the information that we hold about our customers so, as part of our recruitment process we will carry out the following checks.
Proof of legal right to work- A current signed passport
OR
- Full Birth Certificate, proof of National Insurance Number and a recent passport photograph.
If you haven’t provided a passport as proof of legal right to work please provide :
- A Current Full UK Photocard Driving Licence
- Current Full UK Driving Licence (old style paper version)
- A utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 3 months for current address.
- Utility bill or bank statements for previous addresses covering 3 year period.
If you have been in full time employment this can be in the form of a pay slip, P60, P45, or tax return dated within the last 3 months
OR
If you have not been in full time employment please provide other documentation to evidence the gap eg. A child’s birth certificate, travel documentation or documents which confirm receipt of academic qualifications
So I'm still not sure if they look at your credit rating. But I guess you're right, I could phone them up. It's just bad enough talking to my own bank let alone one I'm not with, hehe.

i was credit checked before i started working for a high street bank.
i had a few minor dents in mine and still got the job. i don't know how serious the dents would have to be to make a difference though.Oo==Murphys' No More Pies Club Member #156==oOOo== Weight 1/1/08 14st2lb =O= Target Weight 10st =O= Weight 23/01/09 12st10lb==oO0 -
I can confirm that First Direct certainly do credit checks on all applicants. I went to their recruitment Open Day in Stourton earlier this year and this was made very clear.
However they would not specify what would preclude them taking on a particular applicant.
Many years ago - when I was a cash-rich DINKY (remember those?) - I worked briefly in Financial Services and we were told that even a late catalogue payment would have meant "thanks but no thanks".
I'd follow standupguy's advice on this one - she needs to give them a ring (landline not 0870!) and even if she finds out that it is a problem with RBS don't assume that all have the same criteria.
Good luck. Procrastination? Mmm, let me think about that ...
Useless fact - funerals are VAT exempt :A0 -
Hi, yes RBS group do a FULL credit search. See my previous post, my sister got turned down a job with them even though she banks with them and has just been given a credit card with £1000.00 limit off them.0

Well she phoned RBS careers and they said you need a good credit record for the last SIX YEARS and somebody with defaults, bad debts etc need not apply.
Oh well, back to the drawing board!!
Thanks for all the advice xProud to be dealing with my debts!

In the words of RBS Careers advisor:
They require 2 years provable financial status (pay slips/proof of benefits)
They will not consider anyone with:
- unsatisfied debts within the last two years
- satisfied debts within the last six months
They will only consider applications from candidates with a clear credit history of 6 years or more.
They also said this is black and white, with no flexibility as they check your history before considering your application.
Thanks to Mrs Turnip for the infoProud to be dealing with my debts!

I graduated with a thick wedge of student loans, overdrafts coming out of my ears and passed a banking credit check. I think they appreciate that most people will have debts, they are trying to weed out those who perpetually let things get out of control and CCJ's and the like0

Just because somebody has slipped up a few times with utility bills and a student overdraft, doesn't mean they 'perpetually let things get out of control'. :rolleyes:Proud to be dealing with my debts!

that was my point and exactly what I passed a check with, it may also be dependent on what role you are going for.
If you have a direct cash handling role then they may be more stringent, if it's back office they probably can offer more leniency depending on what access/responsibilities they will have. Likewise there are bankrupts employed at many banks as each case is treated individually rather than a blanket ban. Don't be so defensive it wasn't a direct slight on the fact that a careers adviser had told your partner not to apply0
