    Hiya everyone,

really been enjoying reading all the posts after mine with relation to what i said.

I know of course i am very lucky in the sense that i walk to work but when you look at a rise in petrol, it affects me as well but not to the extent (i made the decision to move 20 miles towards work)

with regards to me looking to buy, i am actually looking in the 6-9-12 category and i wont bore you all with the details but i have the extremely lucky position that my dad has the ability to give me a deposit of reasonable size for my 21st (which he has done with all three of my older sisters). This again isnt a normal situation i know but at least explains why i want to wait for maybe a year.

again, i know the housing makes up only a part of the whole construction industry and then only a tiny part of our economy but it is the one sector (construction) that i work in and know a reasonable amount about so thought only best to discuss that topic!

but hey, on the plus side of things, in a year or two homeowners wont be so worried if the houseprices to bounce back as i hope!

basically, i know i have a somewhat strong opinion backed by a fortunate position by way of where i live being close to work and so forth... but, and this is a big but, i know how hard things can be for people and i know especially that my sister struggles with her husband and two children so i can appreciate where some of you guys are coming from and dont want to seem really negative about the situation,i was just hoping to throw a different opinion / scenario into the mix to see if i was the only one or not!

hope you all have too had a no spend day today as well!

    x si.

Variety is the spice of life and it would be boring if we all thought the same!

Good luck with the house hunting... I'll get there one day!

  • I think that everyone is affected in some way.

from my familys point of view, it has hit very hard

my hubby is a finacial advisor dealing with mortgages, and we know whats happened there

his wage is down approx £1,000 per month

and then as he drives to appontments his petrol has increased and he know spends £70 - £80.00 just on petrol

then there is the cost of food

our gas and electric went up by £40 a month

you will be very lucky if it dosn't affect you.

lilac have you looked online? i found a place that did my tyres for 26 each and then put me in touch with a company that came to my house and fitted them for me (they can go to work places too) for only another 20ish.

i was being quoted 35+ per tyre from other places as well!

think my gas has gone up by about 20 a month but electric has stayed fairly constant to be honest...

lucy - when are you looking to going to america? thats one thing i could definately not afford at the moment, although everytime i look i think i could if i bought my flights in dollars or something!! haha i wish!

Lucy, OH thinks maybe £120 each  Apparently they are 17 inch low profile tyres and that means pricy.

To me they are the black things on the wheels  thank god my dads friend owns a garage so he will get the best deal he possibly can on what is needed. I dread to think the dent in my pocket otherwise.

Ebay are wanting £140 a tyre for the same dymensions I have ooops

That is another pitfall to having a family, you need a reasonable sized car to get the 2 car seats plus double pushchair, changing bag, toys, seat for baby while in someone elses house etc etc.

Excuse the hormonal rant, was due our 2nd on monday and i'm still hugely fat :( and waiting on this labour business to really kick in.

OO add that to the fact my maternity pay is £117 a week and i'm the main earner in general with a salary of 30k it means we are feeling the rising costs a bit more than we would of done this time next year or last year.

    Oh Pixie....

Huge hugs hon. I only own a festia, but have firestones... I will not be replacing them with firestones! Cheap we go!!

I'm not looking to go to the States until at least next year, and I will be staying with friends in Washington, so hopefully I will manage it, if not I will be looking at 2010! I just need something to work towards.

Speaking of petrol... I used to be able to totally fill our tank for £35 from empty.... recently it cost us £45 to fill it... and it still had a 1/4 of a tank worth of petrol in it... _pale_

Thought I'd add our situation to this

We are a family of four - 2 small children in nursey, have a mortgage 125,000 and a three bed house a car, no debt whatsoever and earn @38K a year.

So because of my commute to work - 70 miles round trip, a company takeover and that company basically screwing us and blaming cut backs and the loss of £2000 a year off the top of my basic salary on the cost of fuel, I work in aviation. if I sign their contract (if I don't life is very hard and chance of compulsive redundancy as my job no longer exists - but I can accept theres) I am almost (because no one is holding a gun to my head) being forced to take voluntary redundancy, but luckily with a good pay out. I have signed to go because the loss of earnings, cost of my fuel, rising cost in nursery fees, food general living expenses all add up and it means that the job I dreamed of for so long as a child and have done succesfully for 8 years will no longer be mine.

I am going back into health care where there is always the need for people.

So in answer to the question yes it affects me - it's raining outside I have been sat in all day with my children because I am watching the petrol as I have work again at weekend and need what's in the tank. We have had some fun and done bits but I can't afford to take them out, my shopping bill is more, utility bills more I could go on.

It has affected me deeply, in my career and in my children. I am lucky to have no debt and am pleased that I took my Grandparents nearly new settee and didn't finance one, or took fancy hols but went to Pontins and can pay my mortgage, but I still need to consider every penny I earn - not nice.

    Love Sarah x x x
