Make lead prices work for your pocket instead

The price of lead is in the news right now because it's 'shot thro the roof' this year. Sorry about the pun but it's relevant.
We have just had a roof repair which involved removing lead and replacing with roofing felt fixed with hot tar - conventional method. It's a well known practice that the roofers will walk off with the removed lead and if challenged will say "We quoted to include removal of rubbish, debris etc from the job." That's where you stand your ground and demand they leave the lead that is rightly yours because.........it's currently bringing 55-60p per kilo at scrap yards.Today we did exactly this, took it to the nearest scrap yard and received £49.50 from only a dormer repair. We had to ask the roofer to remove it from his van where it had fairly quietly without mention, been stored. He meekly did so - clearly knowing that he had been rumbled but couldn't resist asking me if I wanted the bags of rubbish too! For £50 I can stand that, can you?
