Hi, I'm highest bidder item, with 3 hours to go til completion, however one more bid from anybody else will beat me. If I bid again and up my own bid by a fiver, will I end up adding a quid to my current bid, or will it just leave the current bid as it is but add in some protection for me.

It won't up your current bid. That will only happen if you are outbid.
The extra money is only used in that case.

If you can't watch and bid in the last minute/seconds then increase your bid to the highest you are willing to pay.
This will not increase your present bid untill someone else places a bid.

Actually, there have been cases where people have bid against themselves when they've increased their bids.

Bids are supposed to go up by increments, and if your bid isn't a whole increment above the last bid Ebay will increase it until it is.

So if they've bid 99p, and you bid £1 but then bid £1.50 Ebay will increase it to £1.04 as that's the increment (in this case 5p) higher than the last bid.
