Cooking beetroot in the slow cooker

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me is a slow cooker any good for cooking beetroot please? If so how much water should I add, and should the setting be high? I've 6 small beetroot to cook, but a screaming baby stops me from being near the hob!!!!

I'm also thinking about cooking some liver and bacon in the slow cooker but I've no instructions with my slow cooker and unsure of settings etc!!

Any help really appreciated

Thanks
T

We have loads of beetroot, boiling it is a bit of a nuisance because you have to keep an eye on it so it doesn't boil dry, I know you can microwave it but I think that the slow cooker would be good, just chuck it in and leave it

    Anyone done it this way+

If nobody responds, do try it out and let us know.... personally I use the pressure cooker, that's quick and easy.

I will, they just seem suited to being in the slow cooker

  • I'll second that, please do let us know how you get on. I too would like to cook beetroot in my slow cooker :)
  • We've got loads of beetroot too. I'm cooking it tomorrow in the oven. I've never done it this way before but according to Delia ;) it's a great way to do it.
I'm going to fill my oven up with about 20 beetroots at a time  Each individually wrapped in foil and placed on the oven shelves for between 2 - 3 hours (gas 2).

I'll let you know how I get on - it does seem easier than boiling loads (I can't stand all that 'redness' everywhere:o

I can't see why it wouldn't work since when I make casseroles in the slow cooker, I usually add chunks of carrot, swede or parsnip. They're all dense root veggies and seem to cook up okay.

Might it be worth doing the smaller beets in the slow cooker and the large ones by the more traditional saucepan method. I shall be expecting a full cook's report at any moment ladies ...

Just what I thought, they are root vegtables and that is what you use in a casserole in the slow cooker

    I will report back shortly!

Nope...but I did do some in the barbeque embers a la Jamie oliver! And as I have a gas barbeque I don't have 'embers' so to speak but they came out fine...he calls it smoked beetroot, and it was baby beets and some rosemary stalks wrapped in a foil parcel that was pierced so the smoke got in...I honestly didn't think it would work. but it did, and everyone liked it. It took about 30 mins to cook...just keep testing until you can get a skewer through easily. I'd have never thought of trying it!
