Bank/credit card lost our money - any ideas? (long)

This is a bit complicated but any advice would be so appreciated.

We paid my sister in law from our MBNA credit card by cheque on the 5th of June. For some reason even though the money was available it bounced. Then, without us doing it, MBNA transferred the money from our account into my sister in laws on the 10th of June. It left our account on the 10th of June anyway. However the money still hadn't arrived in her account by the 30th so we rang MBNA. Apparently they had mislaid the money and were going to do a 5 day investigation into it. They did this and we received a letter yesterday saying that the money has been transferred to my husbands account number on the 10th of June (it didn't) and we would have to get his bank to look into the problem! But on our statement it says it went into my Sister inlaws account?! We've phoned them again and they are now doing another 5 day investigation. But don't know what to do about it? We've had to pay sister out of husbands wages, so we are now short by £700! Can't afford to pay the bills or do shopping! Has anyone any experience? Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out! Sorry for the long post.

What were you paying her for?
If you issued a credit card cheque to her she would have paid it into her bank account. If it bounced it would have been returned to her.

Your credit card account would have been neutral - ie £700 out and then re-credited (bounced) back to your card account.

If there has been any problem then surely her bank where she paid it into should investigate where the money went?
