Hello
I have a debt with ntl which is about £350.00 i have contacted them loads to find out who the creditor is and who have the account so i can pay it off.
They are useless. they said it was send to a collection agency, they gave me the name. so i contacted them, they told me that they forwarded it back to ntl cuz they couldnt trace me.
Wot do i do now, i dont want this debt turnin up in a few years time. when i have actually tried to resolve it.
The funny thing is, ntl told me that although it says wot i owe, the balance is now £0.00 i dont understand, he said it may be written off. it was only last year i left ntl.
Can someone help me, i dont want them tracin me, id rather pay the bill.
thanks x

If you have the money available why don't you put it in a savings account and leave it?
Then if a bill turns up you can pay it, and if not after a period of time (is it 6 years) you'll have some cash to play with.Nil Illegitimi desperandum carborundum

Could you contact experian and Equifax to see if there is anything showing up on your credit history? Then that might give you a lead on who's got it or if there's nothing there, stick the money in savings and wait.
Chances are as well if someone does chase you in 6 months you can offer a reduced settlement then you're still quids in.
I'd be inclined to do that if it wasn't tarnishing my credit history and no-one was chasing0 -
I'd be wary about just leaving it to be honest. Like you say, you don't want another letter turning up in 6 months. You don't know what it could be doing to your credit rating.
Personally I would phone up NTL again and be very firm and persistant. If they say that you do owe them pay it and ask for a letter for confirmation that you paid. Then ask them to close the account and once again ask for a letter to confirm this.
If they say the balance is £0 ask for a letter confirming that everything is settled and that you owe nothing. Again, ask for them to close the account and once again ask for a letter to confirm this.
Once it has been settled one way or another wait 6-8 weeks and get a credit report to make sure.0 -
Hi
I was under the impression that when a debt is sold on to an outside debt collector most accounts are put to zero balance with the original company as the debt has been transferred (bought by)to the debt collection agency
If it was me, I would put some funds to one side (high interest account) as a letter/phonecall will eventually turn up/happen-think they have up to 6 years to chase you

I would write letters to both NTL and the collection agency that they have apparently sent the debt onto. Send them by recorded delivery, print out the delivered receipts and attach to copies of the letters. Then stick the £350 in a savings account. Then if they turn up in a couple of years time demanding the money plus charges, interest, etc. you can demonstrate that you tried to pay the debt before and just repay the £350 owing. Also it would be an idea to keep an eye on your credit reports in case they try to register it as a default - I imagine the reference agencies would reverse it if you can prove you tried to pay it.
Can't see what else you can do really, as if you send the money to NTL or the collection company, it's probably just going to disappear into a black hole.0 -

I'm pretty sure your'e right but as the OP said, the agency who bought the debt said it was clear because they couldn't trace that person!0 -
I think I would do what Fondue has just advised. This way you have proof and therefore documentation to fall back on in the future.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0

Don't pay it to NTL!!! - Stick in high interest account - NTL are always cocking my bills up - they'd probabLy lose it and then come after you next year!!!!Noli nothis permittere te terere
