Obviously it's a no brainer. You can't do without food, and would be illadvised to miss work which would possibly lead to loss of job.

I agree. Contact the council before they contact you and let them know the situation. They will allow you to pay on pay day if you explain.

I'd make a token payment even £1 then use the rest to live on. As long as you keep in contact to show you are trying they should be ok.

Definatly get on to the council and say you are having difficulties and sort out a repayment plan. Possibly suggest you pay it in the free months at the end of the year.

Then get yourself over to the old style board and get some tips on menu planning etc. Maybe say what you already have in the cupboard as some of the chaps are very good at coming up with meal ideas.

    Hi Paddy,

Obviously your health & welfare are paramount so food & keeping your job are priority.

The council will appreciate this & will also be much more willing to help if you initiate contact to try & work out a solution with them. I had a problem with my council recently & they were brilliant.

    Good luck,

What's caused the problem this month? Have you had less pay? Spent it on something else? Had other bills to pay?

You need to identify why this situation has arisen so you can stop it again.

I hate to put a damper on this but I contacted my council because I was having difficuly in paying and they said I had to go through the process of a summons etc etc before they could go into payment arrangements.

I pointed out that this wasn't very helpful for people struggling but it would appear that was policy.

Hopefully your council will be more sympathetic. Sorry!

My council were great last year when I was having problems paying. They agreed to split the payments until the end of the year (normally it is paid by end Feb) then when I had further problems they sent me a payment card and advised me to pay as much as I could on it-even if it was £2 a time. I finally paid it off in April-ironically they sent someone out to see me to discuss the last £200+ owing (my council tax, even with 25% discount is a whopping £1450),he was on the doorstep when I got back from paying it off and he was as amused as I was. He did say though that had I not have paid he would have just agreed terms with me.
    Not all councils are monsters.

Well OP. Did you call the council? What did they say? I'm sure they were fine. You gotta eat.
