Company director's role?

I've been trying to find out what being a company director involves, reason:

Currently have a business as a sole trader
Want to set up a separate business as a Ltd company, which my accountant has told me I should ask my hubby to be a director.

BUT he may go self employed as an electrician in the future, so worried we are going to end up being penalised for tax.

ALSO no clear what his role and responsibilities would be, as I want to run the business alone so he has no input on it.
