My b/f joined a gym back in Nov 2006. He signed a years contract and carried on using the gym after a year and they kept taking the dd. About 5 months ago he found a new gym and spoke to reception about giving notice. They said he did not need to give written notice but he did (his contract said after the year only 1 months written notice is needed)
We have just recieved a phonecall now 4 months later saying he owes £80. He explained about the notice and said basically they can swing for it!
They reckon they didnt get any written notice and they are going to take further proceedings.
I am wondering,
1. why didnt they contact us sooner if they supposedly had no written notice.
2. have they got a lag to stand on
3. are they really going to take us to court over £80.
Ive also heard this certain gym isnt getting much business, so maybe they are trying to get some money back!

If the gym wanted one month's written notice, please either hand it in at the reception and ask for a receipt or send it recorded delivery.
I used to work for a gym and always told customers if they wanted to cancel, to do it this way, so that they have a record. Also ask for a letter of confirmation to state when last payment will come out from bank account.Mortgage free as at 1/9/13 :j

That's a really good point. I'm leaving my gym (for reasons outlined in another post). I will make sure I ask for written confirmation that they understand I am cancelling my membership. If you see someone without a smile.Give them yours :A
