The bit no-one seems to have pointed out is that the 2000 odd staff that are being made redundant are dwarfed by the number of subbies who suddenly won't be able to get a job for love nor money.
Yes, very true. Employers will be trying to keep their main workforce in work and all subbying work will go by the wayside.
Although I don't really know many subbies who work on new builds, I do know alot that do other work and I would say that the pressure for jobs is starting to build. I first noticed this the end of last year and its getting worse.
I'm guessing the ones coming from mainly new builds are migrating over to other types of jobs.

Lots of talk about local property developers going bust.

Im sat here worried sick, OH subs to Persimmon as a chippie, hes coming home at the moment telling me about loads of people who are being made redundant on his site, hes got 2 more weeks to work then god knows what were going to do.

Went out one day last week, as he didnt have work for that day and noticed loads of sites were closed, it was weird

Why cant somone step in and do something, its wrong that so many people are losing jobs left right and centre.

Well, not new builds. Anything else. Refurbs, private extensions, firms moving into new premises...... I'm actually still very suprised by the amount of businesses still moving into bigger/better premises, although it does seem to be now coming to a slowdown.

What would you suggest 'they' do?

The housing boom was unsustainable, it is now collapsing under its own weight.

Unfortunately, the time when politicians could 'do something' has long passed. We are headed for a whopping recession and those who haven't been prudent with their finances over recent years are up s*** creek.

The best thing politicians can do now is make sure that the recession is a short, sharp one so that the malinvestments of the last decade are thrown out and the economy can start to rebuild. Of course, all signs are that they are doing the exact opposite by trying to bail out various vested interests meaning that this one is going to be protracted. Probably >3 years before there are any signs of real 'green shoots'.

I think really, this is due to an excess of commercial property on the market, some of my customers are getting excellent rates for moving to new premises, one has I think 2 years free rent on a 5 year lease.

I'm not suprised that the bottom fell out of the com property market. Round here there are more empty office blocks than you can shake a stick at.... and I mean that litteraly! Most have been empty since we move to this area almost 3 years ago.
