Savings tax refund

in Cutting tax
My son has within the last week filled in tax forms going back 4 years as he has found he has paid tax on savings which were in trust for him which shouldn't of been taken as all the relevent forms with the bank were filled in. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes for the tax office to look into this and make the refund which is due if everything is on order?

I'm moving this question to the "Cutting Tax" board, where hopefully a tax expert will help.Torgwen.....................

Be prepared to wait for a month, or even more. Unfortunately it may take that long. However, you might get lucky and have it back within the week. It really does vary that much.
If you haven't heard within two weeks, a phone call chasing it up (in a polite way, not annoyed and giving them hassle) might speed things up.0 -
I spoke to the Revnue today and they said that they are currently processing returns from 8 weeks ago  Obviously it varies from one district to another, but I have also found that they take longer processing refunds than they do requesting payments. Don't know why :rolleyes:0

It will vary from office to office. Also varies depending on what it is. I.e the processing of returns will almost definately be different to dealing with other types of forms.
Really there is no way of knowing when you will get the refund until it arrives through your letterbox!0 -
I apply for a refund at the end of every tax year and it is always with me within 28 days. This is from the Exeter office.
Did you know you can back claim for 6 years, don't know if this is relevant for your son.0 -
Thanks for all your replies :T :A and thank you Fran i didn't know this board was here. Looks like he will have to wait and see how long it will take, he's tearing his hair out as its actually about £500. As for claiming back 6 years, on the forms we filled in it states that for the date 1999 he would of had to of claimed by 31 Jan 2005 which has gone, that amount was only about 6p anyway its the last 3 that rang big bells in his head when he went through everything. The money was put into trust by his grand parents for him when he was born and added onto by them over the years, they were also named on the account but since he turned 16 they didnt think to check the tax issue.0

form? If it was an R40 form, was it sent to one of the 5 Claims offices? Did your son contact the office first, or just send in a form?
There are only 5 offices that deal with R40 claim forms, and having known people that work in one of the offices, they tell me that they must contact you within 21 days (either with a refund, or to clarify something, or to acknowledge there will be a delay). They also tell me it is faster if you contact the claims office first so they can allocate you a reference number. The process takes slightly longer with forms that come in with no reference number. If it wasn't sent to one of the 5 claims offices, then it will take longer has it will be fed through the system until it reaches the claims office!0 -

Sorry, but you are slightly mis-informed.
All offices will deal with forms R40. Claims offices only deal with them (and various other forms) when the individual is not already dealt with by a 'normal' office for various reasons.0 -
I think the forms hae gone to Liverpool which they were i cannot remember but they were requested direct from the Halifax bs. dept. that deals with the tax issue.0

Just a follow up. My son received a letter from the tax people asking for some information on the tax paid which he sent off approx 10 days ago. This morning he received a letter saying that the full amount of tax and some extra he hadn't claimed for would be credited in his bank account by 16th November. So he's obviously pleased with the outcome.:) thanks to everyone who replied0
