I'm trying to help some friends who have reclaimed their PC now the kids have finally left home.
It had bits of Norton and McAfee plus illegal download sites.
It's an HP desktop just under 4 years old with XP Home SP1.
I expected to wipe everything, use my slipstreamed XP SP3 and the key on the PC case.
I ran Jellybean Keyfinder to find it was installed with a different key to the sticker on the case.
It seems they initially had trouble and HP sent them a set of recovery CDs.
When I use my disk (OEM), I can install using either of their keys, but neither will activate, even after using the 'phone service.
The advice was to try the Validation Department on 0870 during working hours.
The confusing thing to me is that if I use the recovery CDs and the PC is connected to the internet, it automatically activates.
I've proved this by updating from the Windows Update site.
The drawback is that it installs Norton 2003 and a load of trial software.
I could use Decrapifier but will have problems with Norton, as I believe I need the licence key (long since lost) to use the uninstaller.
I'd rather do a complete clean install if possible.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Apologies but after 22.00 I won't be back here until Monday evening to see (any) replies.

Use the Recovery CDs. Use Decrapifier for as much as you can. Norton needs to be removed using the Symantec Uninstaller which you'll need to download from Symantec.com0

I've never used it and thought I needed the product key, but have just checked and I should be O.K.Use Decrapifier for as much as you can
Seems a good tool, I've installed Xp several times for myself recently, so I've got a good idea of what's needed.
Thanks Conor.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
SORTED IT!
Did have, 5x recovery disks = XP Home SP1(auto activation) + Norton 2003 + trials and assorted cr*p.
Now have, 1 CD=XP Home SP3 (auto activation) + no extras.
All done without illegal downloads or any other underhand means.Move along, nothing to see.0
