They will allow an exchange on a non faulty item without a receipt.
    Gone ... or have I?

they also allow refunds on faulty items, they can tell you bought it from your clubcard if they ring customer service. found this out after the store refused to refund me and so i rang customer services. also your credit card statement acts as proof of purhcase

That is correct, as their policy does not affect your statutory rights. However, the OP's item is not faulty.

I know, I just mentioned it as I thought (mis-interpreted your post sorry) that you were suggesting they wouldn't.

If you take it back with no reciept and the item has since been reduced, you'll only get the lower price.

That happened to me when I bought a top that didn't fit, but lost the reciept. The credit card slip was no good as I'd bought other shopping too so the price charged on there was much higher than the item I returned.
Here I go again on my own....

In my Tesco if you don't have the receipt for an item of clothing, they will allow you to swap for another item but won't refund. For some reason they also insist that you can only choose from items on the first floor ie clothes, electricals, home, cds etc - they won't let you exchange for food.

They should accept a bank statement or credit card bill as proof of purchase too.

They should be fine to swap it. Last year I brought the version 3 Baby Annabell doll from Toysrus, then I spotted that Tesco had the version 4 for only a couple of quid more as well as the version 3 for the same price I had paid so I exchanged it and paid the extra couple of quid. The doll I gave back went straight on the shop floor to be sold to someone else.
