Hi all,
I have a problem my friend has their pc here and it is connected to internet for a while and my pc is upstairs but is not connected. I have tried turning it on this morning and it comes up with is the compaq screen with system restore and another option. it took about fifteen minutes for windows to boot up! does anyone have any ideas why this might be? x

Well, first of all I doubt your friends pc is causing you any problems while browsing the internet. I see you have a Compaq (laptop or desktop) that will not boot up quickly taking some 15mins. My thoughts are that you have a faulty hard drive sector and is having to be re-read several times to start or you have a flat backup battery in the (laptop) or I'm missing the last option message you mentioned. A little bit more (a lot) would be nice to go on.
When running is the pc normal in all respects? Do not choose the restore option at this time until you have made a full backup of all your data.0 -
I have a desktop. It just stays on the compaq screen for fifteen minutes. Then loads windows i cannot afford to replace it at the moment and am worrying about losing everything. What information do you need? do i back up everything to disk?

It sould be several things such as virus etc.
What does it run like when it is up, and what processes are running?
Anything unusual? You need to bring up the task manager as soon as you can to.
see what is consuming resourses.
It is possible the drive is in PIO mode which makes everything slow.
control panel - system - hardware - device manager - ide controllers - rightclick - properties on primary IDE - advanced settings.
Make sure it is not in PIO mode, should be DMA or ultra DMA.
Also how much ram have you got and what is running at startup in msconfig startup.
There should not be a lot of stuff, 5-6 in mine, you might have a few more.
Anything unusual?
Lots more info needed really to narrow things down.0 -
