lemons - waxed

Is it possible to remove the wax that lemons are coated with to be able to use the zest safely or is it really only safe to use unwaxed ones?

run them under hot water - I put them in a seive and pour the kettle over them then give them a little rub/scrub and then zest them.

Thanks r.mac - I usually wash in a small amount of hot water with a speck of washing up liquid, then rinse in very hot water but someone at work was telling horror stories about how nothing removed wax from fruit and how I could be looking into the jaws of death for doing this :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: and I got all woosey (sp?) about it.:o

So long as you don't get into a car or use the roads, keep to a regular weight, take plenty of exercise, don't smoke or eat smoked foods or have barbeques, don't drink, then the wax from lemons probably will get you ;):D

I think waxed lemons have been around for far longer than unwaxed ones. My mother used to feed us cakes with zest from unwaxed lemons;)
