Poor part exchange values

Hi all.
I am trying to buy myself a modern used car, and in the process, get a fair price for my current car (money saving - hence I have posted in this section)
But I have had a few of the main dealerships give me ridiculous partx values for my current car. Local garages give better values, but they unfortunately do not have as many vehicles on offer or the one I would like.
Is there anything I can use/say to these larger dealerships which will make them budge?
I am thinking of telling them when I go to a viewing, I have done my research and know exactly what my vehicle is worth and how much theirs is that they are trying to sell me. Maybe my knowing the facts and figures will force them into submission.
I find the whole process extremely stressful as not only are they making a ton on what they sell you, but they also try and make a lot on the car you give them.
I got my car a year ago for £2000 privately with a forecourt value of between 2800 and 3000. I have used about 3 used car value sites which tell me its worth between 2500 and 2950 however these dealerships are offering £1000. It is ludicrous!
Maybe I am just not used to the car dealing market! Small garages give you a better deal because they are smaller? Larger dealerships do not because they are big and don't care, they have lots of customers?!
I just do not know!! Your thoughts and suggestions would come in very handy. :money:

What car is it you want to part-ex and what is the mileage?

The px value doesn't matter - the cost to change does.
If you look up the price of your old and new car, look at the difference and then get as close to (or beat) this price.
If I offer you say £4000 for your car, but charge £5000 extra for the new one, does it make it a good deal??0 -
The best solution is if you want a decent amount of money is to sell the car privately yourself.
I also suggest you look at the purposed road tax increases for the car you have as these are affecting the value of used cars. http://www.parkers.co.uk/I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I think its just an indication that they don't really want your car.As someone already said its the differance between what they offer for your car and what they are prepared to sell you a newer car for.I think you are always better off selling your car privately (if you can) and then doing a deal without having to part-exchange.0
