Cheers for the tip re boardman bikes. Had a look in Halfords last week tho not a trial cycle and they did seem to have some pretty good offers. will give it another go.
though not today obviously I'd be washed off the road

boardman urbon comp is a hybid so it will be pretty nippy around town if you comit to buy ask them if they will put a ladies saddle on for you. dont forget your essentials pump (mini one that can be attached onto frame ), 2 spare inner tubes, plastic tyre levers, bike bag ( goes on under saddle ) and most important crash helmet. also try and haggle on your essentials;)0

I asked them to see if they could source a part and they didn't bother despite a couple of calls. Clearly only interested in sales by now not in aftersales service. Which is a shame cos it wasn't like that before...
Dunno were you get the ideas they're only interested in sales and not aftersales service from.
I've shopped there for over 17 years ever since they were across the road in a wee pokey shop, and not once have they ever refused to source a part, especially one from a bike bought from them.
I really find it strange that they would say that a problem from one of their own bikes is nothing to do with them, mainly because of the fact that all bikes are under warranty from the bike maker. Any problems that the shop can resolve is forwarded to the company who would sort it, i know this because it has happened to me with one of my bikes from them.0 -

I was surprised too, I know it had been a lot better when I bought the bike first and in the initial aftercare service. But when I went back recently the guy didn't know, couldn't get hold of anyone, took my number and said he'd get back to me but it was pretty obvious at the time he wasn't going to bother. The fact that I'd bought the bike there was dismissed out of hand as well. Fair enough it was prob about five years ago I bought it but it still has their sticker etc on it and I wasn't looking for anything to be done without paying for it. Maybe it would still be fine if you get the owner although I've had a good look in when I've been passing and not really seen him there ...
Actually when I think of it, it was a sort of attitude thing too. I don't know if it's being female and (ahem) middle aged or if it was the type of bike I had but in the end they made me feel a bit stupid for being there in the first place - you know that superior attitude that makes you feel small...a shame really cos they used to be very nice in there.0 -
Some (if not all) JJB Sports store are closing down. It may be worth a look there.
Also have you considered Freecycle? You can sometimes pick up a bike on there.0
