cheapest way to get rid of a bed?

Definitely not useable any more! Do we pay a man with a van or should my council be able to help out? It definitely won't go in the car!

We live in kent if it helps

Our local council will take large items away for free.Ring the refuse collection department in your area and ask.You may have to wait a couple of weeks though, and you have to put it out on the day of collection yourself.
    Worth a try!

Furniture in good condition could be re-used - you could contact a furniture project who may be able to collect.
If the item is for disposal, you can either take it to your local HWRC or contact your local council for a bulky collection (a charge may be made for this service).

If you are buying a new bed from a traditional furniture dealer rather than a Superstore you may find they will if asked dispose of the old bed when they deliver the new one.

We have to pay the council for large items.

You could try offering it on your local Freecycle group (Yahoo group, free to join) as someone may want it, even if for firewood.

Great suggestion! Even without the plastic and label, it's probably close enough to bonfire night for it to disappear easily. Metal bits like matress springs don't burn of course, but there's always metal debris left at the end of big bonfires, so where I come from the coucil send someone to clean up after them.
Beware of men with vans offering cheap waste disposal. Many are illegal fly-tippers. There was a recent episode of Rogue Traders about this issue on telly. If in doubt, ask to see their licence.
My local council (Dumfries & Galloway) charges £7.50 to dispose of large items such as beds. They take metal items such as cookers free, since these can be recycled, and there are charities which take stuff in reusable condition free.
I live in flats with big communal wheelie bins out the back, which can accommodate matresses and dismantled beds.
If you take the bed apart and either borrow a chainsaw for the matress, or enlist the help of family to squish it into as small an area as possible and tie it with an old clothesrope, you might find it's possible to squeeze it into a car with seats folded down.
