No fruit on our gooseberry and raspberry bushes

In 2007 we planted gooseberry and raspberry bushes ( 1 of each) in our vegetable plot. They were pruned at the end of 2007. We have no fruit on either bush. We have a fruit expert book but it makes no mention of this problem. Does any have any idea what we are doing wrong?.

Did you cover them with a net (mesh finer than 1/2''). If not the birds have had them.

Thank John. That was what my husband said. I will buy nets for next year.

My 3yr old gooseberry bush dropped most of it's flowers when we had a really cold few days when it was flowering, so I've only got 2 gooseberries on it. My raspberries however are covered in fruit. If you check your fruit book there are two types of raspberries, some fruit on this years growth (late fruiting ones I think) and some types fruit on last years growth (these are the ones I've got). In autumn I cut back all the stems that fruited this year leaving only stems that have come through this year. IYSWIM

Did you have flowers earlier in the year?

I suspect that it was because they were moved and sometimes take a year or two [yup] to settle down and produce. Nothing you are doing wrong, and probably not the birds. You just have to be patient I am afraid.

    Hi

Do you only have one rapsberry cane? You might be better with several.

if your raspberry is summer fruiting, then you pruned out the fruiting wood last year. You might, might get an odd berry late autumn. If it is autumn fruiting, I would not expect to see flowers on the new wood yet.

Re the gooseberry, the weather might have affected it, but other thoughts are, it is too new, if it has just been moved it it may need watering, depending where you live. Are there any gooseberries near by (within half a mile?).

Thanks RAS, yes we have only one raspberry cane. Will try to be a bit more gentle with the pruning this year. I don't think any neighbours have gooseberry bushes.

We have 2 gooseberry bushes and next door have about 3 and between us i think there might have been about 10 gooseberries. Last year we both had masses. I have loads of raspberry canes which are heavily fruiting but some of them haven't yet as they are autumn fruiters and maybe that is the case with your one.

I have two types of raspberry but not sure which is which :o

They were all just single "sticks" when I put them in the ground and some have remained a "single stick" and now have flowers/fruit on, whilst others have gone bushy, sprouting lots of new stems but no flowers/fruit yet.

Is now the right time to prune Raspberry and Gooseberry bushes?

I have one of each in separate pots, they were from Wilkinsons and have both been in for two years now with no flowers or fruit. I think I may have pruned back the raspberry too much last year. The gooseberry bush has been attacked by little caterpillars the past two years running and they strip the leaves right off. They are so small I can't really see it happening until it's too late :(

Anyone know how to prevent the caterpillar problem? and how much/far should I prune?

    Thank you
