Some time ago I offered to lend a friend £200 when I lived in Germany. I then had to go back to the UK suddenly but said I would still lend her the money. "Just put it into my Abbey Nat account when you've got the money" I said.
Of course I didn't see the money again and at the time £200 was equivalent to two weeks FT take home pay for me. I was actually more gutted that a 'friend' had let me down.
If I have to lend a couple of quid from a work colleague my first priority the next day is to return it to them. Invariably they say it doesn't matter. My reply is that it's their money and that in future they'd feel OK doing it again.
BTW, I'm a great believer in what goes round comes round!0 -
Any chance that he also took your advice to join this forum and has read this whole conversation - hence the sudden conscience?
It's entirely possible!0 -
With me it all depends on the circumstances and who it is - if I'd lent a couple of quid because a friend was short then I wouldn't mind about not getting it back but once the neighbour lent a couple of quid for tobacco and although he did pass that back I would have reminded him!!
Another friend owes me for petrol money for taking him and his dog to flyball competition - I've yet to see it !! I'm not bothered about the money as I was going with my dog anyways but its the principle and I'm not taking him anywhere again unless he pays his old debt and pays in advance !!!
With family (sisters/brother) we're all pretty honest and if we borrow off each other we always pay back our debts - a good quality our mum instilled in us:A and so I'd lend them whatever they needed if my funds allowed it.
My partners family is another kettle of fish !!! well his dad can look after himself, his brother I wouldn't, his sister possibly but his mum - NO WAY !!!! you just wouldn't get it back !!!!0 -
I would only give them the money if I could afford not to get it back, and only if it was a desperate situation which my one off loan would actually help (and not if it would just allow them to hide from reality a bit longer). Harsh but helpful in the long term.
If it was something they needed less than £5 and I had the money I would just get them the thing (unless it was cigarettes or alcohol).
