Nyk, I can't remember how old your DS is. I say you need to insist that he pays a regular contribution. Make it a weekly amount - maybe a quarter or fifth of his earnings, if he is paying nothing now.
My parents paid £1k a month rent for my sister's flat thro uni, when she could easily have house-shared, or rented a room. She is so dreadful with money, and very spoilt despite a good salary, and it has done her such a disservice.
I wish I'd known more about money and budgeting when I grew up.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
I don't have children so I am no expert here, but I heard about someone (I think it was in the Tightwad Gazette) who instead of making her son pay rent, etc, agreed with him that he would pay the electricity bill for the entire household and that would be his contribution. The result was an amazing decrease in electricity consumption as her DS ran all over the house turning off lights, etc - and it trained him for when he got his own place.'Whatever you dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin now.' Goethe

Looking at my budget again as Saturday is spreadsheet day. My figure for next year's "all in" challenge will be £15,000. Can't believe it's so much. Nearly 2/3 of that is my mortgage, CT, utilities and phone, leaving just over £5,000 for food, clothes, haircuts, medical and dental, all travel, entertainment and holiday. Probably will need a new computer and some other spends in there too, which aren't in the £15K yet.
What do the rest of you spend or think you'll spend "all in"?
I was scared to work it out! If I count up rent, council tax/water, utilities and insurance, that's £10k right away, then there's all the other stuff you mentioned... then there are pension payments, National Insurance... and there's nowhere in there yet for holidays, let alone DD's wedding.
 I calculate that next year's total spend may be at least £20,000  and that's only if we live a very frugal lifestyle of as close to self-sufficiency as possible. Any other way is just impossible.
Is it OK if I don't wanna play any more? Going to put a washing on then head off to bed to watch more 'Friends' and mull over how to afford to live.
Whitewing & Redglass - My DS is 19 and he pays £40 per week.I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

redglass - that is a cracking idea. Think it would only work with one child in the house. The potential for baiting from siblings would be irresistible (if of course they knew about it):heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. PS nyk, no, it is not okay. We need you. You give up, I give up. Pressure's on.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

Based on my spreadsheet, I'll need to earn £15K net (no idea how much NI I'll have to pay) and that's at nearly bare bones level (only luxury is a holiday). Funny how your house and utilities and CT are the same as mine. I'm living alone in London and you have a family in, I think, Scotland? But you can grow your own veggies and I don't even have a windowbox!2009 CLEAR MORTGAGE:starmod: (17/2/09) LIVE ON 4K Q1:staradmin(£5,405) SAVE 30K (£9.500)0 -
Hello all,
I will be sorting out my all in budget after I have managed to sort out my August. My nursery fees are almost as much as my rent  but luckily I get 80% paid by tax credits and I should be getting the rest from adult learning grant. Also I think that my budget for using the car is more than what my grocery budget should be. I think only thing that I will exclude is all the costs towards different kind of courses and study materials that will (hopefully) advance my new career.
I have now pasta bake and stir fry enough for six meals for us two cooling down and a soup in the slow cooker which should be ready in the morning. I will head off for my bath now, I know it is late but I have been waiting for it all day so don't want to miss it (and I heated the water so don't want to waste it).
About new budget what I also would like to do is to allocate income from different sources to the different categories of outgoings. My recent MB profits are all swallowed into my household money and is not available to put into DD's CTF something that I am really cross about with myself. So I need to get that money back somehow from somewhere.
Night night,

hi all,
this week has been quite expensive although i did have a nsd yesterday and will have another today:)
i would hate to think what my yearly all in total is, although my rent is pretty reasonable, raising kids is expensive however well you economise!
one of my neighbours popped over on friday and gave me a bag of school uniform her dd had grown out of, this should make next years uniform a little cheaper:)
nyk, thanks for your support in the PM you sent me, i have decided s*d it! i am going to continue posting whatever! so again, thanks:DNovember NSD's - 70 -
Nyk when my DS1 left school he was on the YTS sceme but he still paid me 1/3 of his income.
When DS2 was at Uni and worked during holidays shelf stacking, he paid 1/3 of his income.
I think you have to be practical here. It's not as if you are out on the town every night or at Bingo the pub:D
Now, my kids are great with money. They save and only have one CC each which they only use for emergencies.
Both of them volunteered the information that seeing me scrimping, saving and working extra jobs made them realise that nothing is for free :j
Well, that's my opinion on the "keep" debate for sprogs
lyndasharp you never got rained on? Methinks you took a wrong turning somewhere and you actually missed Scotland :rotfl:
Last night I was invited to stay at my SIL's. So I got fed and entertained for freeI also got to experience central heating and not a night buried under throws, fleeces and cats :T
I have started knitting which is something I have not done for years. It's very therapeutic. I will be sussing out eBid and Ebay for wool as I can't believe how expensive it is now.
And of course, it keeps your knees warm0 -
