Can anybody recommend a therapist that uses CBT techniques in Nottinghamshire please?
I have found a list of therapists on http://www.babcp.com, but would rather go by personal recommendation. I was referred to one, but she cannot offer an appt until September!
If anybody has received treatment in the area, NHS or privately, I would be happy to hear from you (good and bad experiences). Obviously if you don't want to post feel free to PM me.
Thanks in advance x

What do you think you would gain from CBT? Most therapies use elements of it but just dont say so just as cbt pinches from other therapies. The best one I know of is in London but I guess that is a bit far from nottingham. Can anybody recommend a therapist that uses CBT techniques in Nottinghamshire please?

I would suggest you look at the British Psychological Society website:
http://www.bps.org.uk/e-services/find-a-psychologist/psychoindex.cfm?&redirectCount=0
and look under clinical psychologists, counselloing psychologists and psychotherapists.
Everyone on this list will have accredited postgraduate qualifications in psychology, some of which will include CBT.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Thanks guys,
absolutebounder, I would rather not go into specifics, but CBT has been specifically recommended for me by a medical professional. London is a bit far (though I did used to go there to get my hair done - my priorities are all wrong!), but thank you x
Thanks pandora205, having had negative experiences with a therapist before, I just wanted a personal recommendation. In my previous attempt at therapy the (fully qualified) therapist was a god fearing Christian (there was even a cross on the wall), and looked utterly horrified everytime I said something vaguely contentious! x
(I don't have any problem with seeing someone who is religious, just not one that is going to judge me!)
I'm thinking of contacting my old uni (I'm returning in September), as they have a pool of therapists, and after assessment will refer you to the most suitable one. It would also be free, which is always a bonus!
In the meantime, my cat is very good at listening, just not sure about the constructive feedback I am getting?!! xGone ... or have I?0 -
any reason you want a face-to-face therapist instead of using the cbt tools free on the internet?
like here:

dmg, have you considered trying 'living life to the full' and/or 'the mood gym' until September? Both were recommended to me by my PCT so they're decent websites and both offer a kind of CBT course that you work through yourself.
Obviously as with your puss there's no feedback but it should tide you over until you can see someone :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
Thanks guys but I have quite a specific need, and the online tools are not suitable xGone ... or have I?0

I would go for one of the BABCP website. They have completed training to masters level or equivalent, plus the BABCP have really stringent requirements for therapists to show that they are competent to treat a range of conditions. They are much more difficult to register with than some other regulatory bodies, plus you have to keep proving that you are good enough to stay on the register. You have to do a certain number of hours of training, have regular supervision and loads of other little things.
Give a few therapists a call and speak to them and see how you find them. If you don't like them on the phone, skip em and move on. One of the most effective components of CBT is the therapeutic relationship. If you don't feel that you can talk to them, give up and move on.
Alternatively ask your GP for another recommendation, or ask the therapist who can't see you til September to recommend a colleague.0 -
It would be quite difficult for someone else to recommend a CBT therapist to you, what suits one person doesn't necessarily suit another person.
If you have a specific problem, there may be therapists who specialise in it and a call to the organisations mentioned in previous posts might give you this info..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
Hi there I am currently receiving CBT and found it difficult to put into practice but I am now getting better and challenge myself and it does work.
It can be used for anything in life and basically you are challenging your thoughts and it can work very successfully with alot of practice. My CBT is in a group setting of about 5/6 people who also have issues this is on NHS and we all get on very well together and are non judgemental, we all have issues and help one another.
Hope this helps I would say go for it life is too short for regrets0 -
Have you tried asking your GP for a recommendation?
Perhaps your practice has a GP who has special interest in mental health issues who may know more about good local CBT services.0
