OMG! I have so much admiration for all of you! I was doing a forum search for a thread on Home Ed as my 9yr old daughter is desperate to leave school. She says her face doesn't fit. She has some sort of learning difficulty but no one has pinpointed it. We live on a farm so I think it would be great for her. I work 3 days a week as a tutor, so those 3 days would be down to my OH who is dyslexic himself. It is such a hard decision to make! My son gets on OK at school and is achieving so will stay at school! We have weighing up the pro's & con's for a year!!
On the issues that started the thread all I can say is never, ever give up hope. Life has a funny way of rectifying itself and as long as you stay possitive and take responsibility for your own actions you will be able to recognise a good opportunity when it arises. Your kids will grow up to have a balanced outlook and be able to tackle problems head on by your lead. What doesnt kill you makes you stronger! xxxxxxxxxxx

Another perspective on home ed - I did it for some months out of sheer desperation of the lack of resources for severe special needs. But I was allowed to do it for one child but was told I would be taken to court if I did it for the other.

When I had one at home I found a sort of nursery for older children where he could go and socialize but it was too far away and I had trouble getting there as I don't drive. Perhaps there are things like that around for the person asking about home ed and looking after children - only they aren't called nurseries but I can't remember the name for them.. My son was about 7 or 8 at the time.

There is also EDUCATION OTHERWISE a group for home eds that you can meet up with other parents and even have classes I think. When I did it there wasn't anyone in my area and it was a long time ago but I think it's all expanded now.

That child wanted to return to school after about 4 months and since then he's blossomed. But the other one had a very difficult time at school.

Hi there. Thank you for your support first of all, and I'm sorry to hear your daughter is struggling. I can relate myself, I dropped out of school suffering from depression at the age of 11 and was self-harming and suicidal.

Anyway...as far as home educating goes, I'm sure you could make it work, even working 3 days. There is no requirement to work every day, and even if you wanted to have quite a structured approach, your OH could stick with more practical subjects, science experiments, art...whatever he is good at. One of the great benefits, of home ed, to my mind, anyway, is that kids learn a much wider range of 'life skills' than they would get in school.

I can understand that it must be a huge decision to be taking a child out of school, but it doesn't need to be final. There is always the option to go back in the future.

I wish you the very best of luck in whatever you decide and if you want some support or advice or anything else please feel free to pm. I would second Angela's suggestion of contacting Education Otherwise.

Oh, and just an update on my own situation. I spoke to my boss on thursday with the intention of handing in my notice, but she has been incredibly supportive (i think there are ulterior motives, but i shall bite back my cynicism, because she has been great!). I have arranged to give up my daytime hours and take on a second night shift, on the basis that things hopefully can't go too terribly wrong with my kids and parents if they're only sleeping there. It is subject to review in a month or so to see how it's working out.

It will mean working slightly more hours for slightly less pay, but it might just work out. I still *really* want to quit and stop depending on my parents at all, but right now that isn't really practical, so I am trying to be sensible about it.

I'm still looking for options to boost my income though, so if anyone has any more ideas, please keep posting, thanks to everyone so far for the contributions ;)

Can I just say that I think anyone who undertakes H/E for their child must be incredibley brave & have the patience of a saint.
I couldn't do it, I don't think I would have any hair left after a week home eding my teenager.

Incidentally whatsername, have you thought about introducing your kids to Scouting/Guiding ?, that way they will get to interact & mix with the very kids whose parents seem to have a very biased attitude towards H/E. They will also learn loads of useful skills & have a great time into the bargain.

I was never in Scouting myself, but got dragged-in when my son joined-up as a Beaver at the age of 5 3/4, as he was under 6 a parent had to stay with him. Unfortuabately one night I stayed, and was promptly 'encouraged' to help (I have now been a BSL for 6 years over 2 periods), so be warned, unless you want to be 'persuaded' to help-out, never, ever, ever use the words 'do you mind if I stay and see what my son/duaghter gets up to?'

  • Hi Im so sorry about your difficult situation.
I am 15 years old and have been home educated for about 4 years. As I am old enough to look after myself my mum is able to work part time. She used to have an ironing service which fit in quite well. If you have a car, you could possibly look into doing the same. You could also join a group or forum for parent who home educate their children, you may find someone in your area who might be able to help, you could perhaps take it in turns to look after the kids, just a though but I hope this helps.
    Good luck.

    Hi Whatsername.

There's a site called working mums that usually has loads of legit work from home opportunities. Not sure if I'm allowed to post links on here but if you type it in Google you'll find it easily.

Hope everything works out for you

    Emma :)
