Credit Card Debt Scam!!!!!!!

A.L.F.
To cut a long story short, last year I had a collection agency (working on behalve of another agency whom had bought this debt) giving me a hard time regarding, they claim, over a credit card debt going back to 1997 for £2,000.
I asked for full copies of the transactions, signatures and where I was supposed to be living where these debts were incurred.
They threatened me with court action and costs so I wrote back to them and told them, "That I will see them in court and that I will submit my own expenses bill once this debt is unproven".
They came back to me with the following, "We can not find copies of the transactions in 1997 and hence we are writing the debt off". They had my past address incorrect and I did not have a credit card untill 2004.
Now then, 3 months ago the same thing has happened to my wife for £7,000 going back to 1997, different collection company but same agency who apparently bought the debt (with a slight name change). They wanted £50 month to clear the debt or court proceedings will start. My wife was in bits over these letters, willing to pay to avoid the letters with threatening actions. I thought, here we go again so I started my campaign again, not heard nothing since - by the way, my wife has never had a credit card in her life.
The point being is that my wife is 72, it has been 11 years since this apparent debt and if she paid the monthly requirements, is somebody getting a monthly income for a scam!
How far back can these companies claim supposed bad debts on credit cards/h.p. and how can they buy debts back to 1997 without all the debtors slips, receipts etc. - to me this is another scam!!!!
Anbody else had this happen to them?????????????

The time limit is 6 years - this is due to the Limitation Act. If you have not heard from them in the last 6 years regarding the debt then even if it is yours, it is statute barred.
But this would probably be best in another forumTotal for 2009: L'Oreal Lip Duo, Diary, Motability Guide
Thanks to everyone who post comps - you are all :cool2:0
