I think it would be helpful to spend a month recording all of your expenditure, that includes direct debits, food, little things you buy everyday.
I can recommend www.spendingdiary.com it allows you to update your expenditure everyday and you can see where it all goes. It is best to write it in a book and that tally it all up at the end of the day.

They've got their own forum, which is pretty good because the MD of the company and the developers log on to answer questions, so if you've got a grumble or a suggestion, you are talking directly to the people who have got the power to implement a change in a new release.0
