Relocating to NYC - what to do with car insurance and mobile contract?

I'm moving to NYC in six weeks to work for four months and am looking to sell my car in the meantime.
I leave at the beginning of August, and my yearly car insurance is up at the end of September, so I'm looking for some way of paying the extra £60 or so for the final month that I don't have my car so that I can obtain a full year's no claims bonus.
As I understand it, I can't insure a car if I'm not the registered keeper - does anyone have any ideas of how I can get around this?
Additionally, my 12 month contract with O2 will be up in October and conversely I'd like to cut my losses as soon as I can and stop paying for the month's I'll be abroad. I also have a cashback deal which provides me with cashback on the 6th, 9th and 12th month - so it gets a little complicated as it may be cheaper to hold on to the contract for a while. Does anyone have any inventive suggestions as to what I could do to get out of this one?
On a similar note, I'd probably be looking to get a full time US mobile number out there for calls/texts back to the UK - does anyone have any recommendations on particular deals? There does seem to be a lot of choice when it comes to prepaid US sim cards online.
