Debt Company

Hi All

I hope someone can help me here as I am getting pretty fed up with this.

I had a joint debt with my Ex-Wife with Abbey National. When we split I was given all the debts to clear up. So this Abbey debt gets passed to a debt recovery company who chase me for payment. I paid them for about three years and reduced the debt down then out of the blue it was handed to another debt recovery company. They were quite good and I offered a full and final settlemenmt of 45% or there abouts.
The outstanding amount was about £2450 and I paid them £1000. They accepted etc and I have a letter from them saying the debt with Abbey National is settled.
Now the former company (called NCO) are occasionally sending me a letter asking for payment. They also call me and ask me for payment and when I tell them the debt has been paid they hangup!
I received a letter from them last week offering a F&F settlement of 65% of what they seem to think is the outstanding amount of £1450. So clearly the £1000 I paid has been deducted! I have ignored these letters in the past but now I just want to report them to someone! I am obviously not taking their !!!!!! but I do feel sorry for anyone who has been taken in by them.

On the letter there is no membership of any debt recovery "body" but is there any one that I can complain to about their persistant hassling - FSA for example?

Thanks

D

  • Can you send a copy of the letter confirming settlement of the debt to the company that have started pestering you?

I would add a strongly worded letter saying that as far as you are concerned the matter is resolved and that you want confirmation in writing from them that this account and business relating to it is closed.
  • Hey Guys Thanks for the advice I will look into it. I would rather just report them then trying to resolve the situation myself. Its apparent that they "are trying it on" as when they call and I say "its paid" they run off!

I'll take a look at the thread you mention.

  • First stop your local Trading Standards office (part of the Council). They should fight your corner for you.

Also, you'll find a link at the bottom of the page for the Office of Fair Trading's complaint form. Fill it in and send it off (Freepost).
