I am soooo excited as one of my hens has laid her first egg !!! We have had our 3 bantams for about 2 weeks and were not sure when they would start laying as we have not got to this stage before.
I felt so guilty at taking her egg that I left it in the nest box for half of the day !! We were not sure how to cook it so that the 4 of us could taste it but decided on frying it with a bacon sandwich. The yolk was so tasty and a lovely bright yellow. My boys who are 6 and 3 were as excited as me, I am so pleased that they have an opportunity to learn where food comes friom etc.
Heres to the next egg !!!

:j Oh that's soooo brilliant :j It's also really REALLY funny imagining you trying to split and egg between four of you :rotfl: (I do totally understand though!!!) How lovely that they feel settled enough to lay, all down to eggselent care I eggspect.
My Mum has hens so I appreciate that lovely orange yolk on a bacon butty..... in fact, a bacon and fresh egg butty is one of my favourite foods in the whole world.
Well done you and long may the eggs continue.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -

I soooooooooo want a fried egg sarnie now
Congratulations to you and your chicken
My Dad used to be like this with his first home grown tomato of the year. He used to grow for taste rather than quantity, Ailsa Craig if I remember correctly, and used to get us all together in the kitchen while he carefully sliced this one tomato and made a sandwich with fresh bread.
Sadly though we were only allowed to watch while he ate the sandwich0 -
Congratulations, that sounds so wonderful. lets hope it is not too long before home laid eggs are a regular occurance.0

Many years ago when my youngest son was around 8 he wanted to keep hens, we bought a hen coup and 6 Rhode Island Reds, they were point of lay when we got them. The hens laid their first egg on ..................easter sunday, my son went out to check as he had been doing every day and came in with the egg in his hand, I have never seen such an expression on a childs face in all my life, and on easter sunday as well....... I boiled it for his tea.......... eventually we used to get 6 eggs a day and even sold some of them, people loved the fresh eggs and the yolks were the most fantastic colour and the tsate, out of this world..........
