the Minefield of getting the best price

Sorry if this is the wrong board - Just been comparing prices on shopping and found that generally Asda is 10% cheaper than Tesco, except for some items! Compared the price of Asda vs Tesco conc washing liquid - TEsco £1.63 for 750ml and Asda is £2.68 and looking at the bottles as closely as I can on little images TEsco does 30 washes and Asda does 25. This is a total minefield and while I thing My supermarket is a great idea I am not that keen on the substitions they do. Bang goes 2 hours while I try and compare prices and find that both shops do not have anything like their full range on line - according to Asda website they don't do bathroom sponge scourers!

I tried this sort of comparison out a while back Patchwork cat, and I came to the conclusion that the best thing to do was to take turns in which shop to go to LOL!
I compared Lidl, Sainbury and Tesco, as they are my three most 'local' supermarket. Tesco and Sainsb. Basics/Value often came out cheaper than Lidl on things like washing up liquid and washing powder, but Lidl had the edge on other exotic stuff that makes life interesting - like pesto and chorizo sausages!
It's a worthwhile exercise though - I did it buy taking a notebook with a list all my usual buys to each shop, and filling in the prices when I did a shop there. Probably be worth doing again......as I said it was a while back....maybe things have changed.

I find it depends what kind of stuff you buy. Notice that Asda's "we're cheaper than Tesco" ads state BRANDED products. So sure, their bags of pre packaged sugary cr*p are I think cheaper. But I don't buy them - I buy value / basics of basic foods eg fruit, veg, baked beans etc - and for that Mr T's value range is, well, better value. Asda don't seem to have "value" versions of the things I buy most
Except this weekend I believe where Asda's doing a 50p sale of various items!"She who asks is a fool once. She who never asks is a fool forever"

I spent about 2 hours 3 weeks ago putting my shopping online at Tesco and then what I would buy at Asda and it did come out 10 % cheaper. I tend to buy loose veg and fruit and no sugary things as we are trying to lose weight. All very cook from scratch - apart from my addiction to caffeine free diet coke ( goodness only knows what it is doing to my insides, but I hardly drink, don't smoke and being on a diet I can't lose that too!)0

As this has now fallen off the Old Style front page, I'll move it over to Shop Don't Drop
