to play on xbox live you need a Xbox 360 and of that there is 3 choices.
Arcade, Premium & Elite
Arcade you can forget about as you will miss the fact it has no internal HDD.
Premium is probably best value for money comes with a 20gb HDD which you need for live play
Elite is te most expensive and comes in black only a 120GB HDD the extra space is usefull if you plan to download a lot of games & movies from the live marketplace but to be honest 20GB is more then enough for the average user.
Prices can vary so shop around0 -
All of the xbox consoles are capable of playing live games. I would suggest you go with a model that has a hard drive so that you can save games and download from the marketplace.
He will need a membership to xbox live, easily bought from Play.com etc and an internet connection. You can usually buy the headset and membership in a pack so that he can talk to friends online if he wishes.0 -

I'm just starting look round for an xbox to at the minute for the other half, and trying to find the cheapest place through the net for the premium before I go actually store shopping (like I do) and have found amazon cheapest so far for the one I want at just under £190, if that helps if you need to save a tiny bit to.O0
