Re Martin's latest Free Anti-Virus & Other Safety Software article AVG 8.0 is shown as free but the reminders I get to update from my present 7.5 version leads me to links which indicate it is no longer free other than for a trial period. How do I get it free on a permanent basis?? Or is it in fact no longer free?? I don't want to pay if I can avoid it!

Thanks to Al Mac, but that link will just take you round the houses. Better to use this one

Thank you for the link, the 'sign up to 8 now' pop up has been driving me crazy for days and I just knew somebody would have a free version of the update if i was patient enough!0

Has anyone had any success in downloading it properly? I've had the pop-up thingy appears on my desktop for umpteen weeks now and have repeatedly tried the download.com link but it's REALLY slow and gives up about a 20% of the way through. I've had a go at downloading it directly from grisoft.com but that's just as bad. I'm still chugging along fine with 7.5 but this pop-up is really beginning to annoy me now.

AVG free is at http://free.grisoft.com/
I've found it really slow though & have gone over to Avast

I have just downloaded via the above link, and it seems fine to me.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Downloaded from geordie joes link last night, was very slow (40 mins) but got there in the end. The only prob I encountered was on opening V8 it said I had no anti spyware cover so I had to click on 'update now' and it reinstalled from there. However I've not had the pop-up this morning - yet. Was getting it every hour that's progress!0

AVG 8 needs to have the old AVG 7 removed completely before installing, the install prog should give you an option of removing it.
AVG 8 has also a lot of compatability issues with other antispyware progs. especially spywareblaster and spybot SD
I've got rid of both those and now run AVG 8 free with malwarebytes:j0 -
Newmike - AVG 8 is still free they just hide the free option well under all the stuff they invite you to buy, so you think its not free anymore, as I did at first. Have installed it OK now from the link in the pop up, with the optional toolbar (which has slowed things up a bit) mainly just has links to the pay for extras, but it checks webpages before you go to them via google to see if they have any problems so you get a tick, or not before you click to go to them, which I spose is helpful.
Skim - If the scan slows up your pc too much, there is a variable set you can do to run it quick or slower depending on what else your pc is running so as not to cause inconveniently slow running of your other applications. (see FAQs) Or run the scan overnight or when you are out and not using pc for anything else. Avast seems to have a good rep tho...Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE.
