Keeping track of gains with cost averaging
Hello, I am looking into investing with regular savings, I'm on HL if that matters. Say I put £100 into a fund that is now up 5%. My gain was 5%. I then put another £100 in, and my "gain" dropped to 2.5% to take into account the new money (5% on original £100, 0% on next £100 to make 2.5%) If I do this regularly, won't the…

IFA Advice
Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help with what is, I know, a pretty naive question! Basically what I am wondering, is what do you get from an IFA? I understand that you pay an IFA a fee, be that a fixed hourly fee for advice or a percentage of the amount you are going to invest, but what I'm unsure of, not…

Alternative to Child Trust Fund
Hoping the forums can help me out on this one. My oldest son (14 next month) got the Child Trust Fund payment, but then we disappeared to Australia for 12 years in which time son number 2 came along. Now we've returned there is £600+ sat in his fund. However, number 2 son hasn't got anything. What we're thinking is maybe…

Risk of funds
Hi My husband has his pension is the Zurich Managed AP fund at present. He has six years to go to retirement and won't necessarily need to draw it straight away as we have a cash buffer, however it is his only pension and is a small amount of £24000. I'm trying to weigh up the pros and cons of moving it to the Vanguard…

Saving in Euro € / NSI equivalent
Good morning. I'm planning to buy a house in euros later this year, and to manage currency risk I expect I should drip-feed a euro account over the next six months. I'll need to build-up, in my terms, a fairly big number (~1m €). So where do I find a suitable account? If it were sterling, I'd use NS&I. So I wonder is there…

Ifa
Morning, so I invested 100k with my IFA split between me and my wife. 20k in a S&S ISA and 30k in a GIA. Started investing in December with him and he put us in Brewin Dolphin balanced and cautious funds which matched our risk profiles. He charged us 2.25% on the initial investment and 0.75% ongoing. The fees for BD and…

Saving for overseas grandchildren
Does anyone have any thoughts on Premium Bonds for overseas grandchildren ? I have 3 grandchildren overseas - in South America and Norway. I have looked into the more conventional bank account savings and believe I can't set these up to put money aside for them. However I can buy them Premium Bonds although I realise they…

'You know what, the headline is wrong. I didn't invest - I gambled. I bought £250's worth of cryptocurrency - Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin - in December. I know nothing about them, I just saw the price rising and thought I could make a quick buck.' Read MSE Guy's full blog: 'I've invested in Bitcoin - it's been a…

IFA fees
I understand the law changed a few years ago so that IFAs now have to charge a set amount or a percentage, rather than making their money from commissions they get from the products they sell. My brother has some investments which were arranged through an IFA dating back to the time before the law changed. He gets a…

Hi all, Apologies if this is not the right thread but i couldn't find a dedicated international/expat one. thoughts for investing with a 14yo
I'm currently weighing up the pros and cons about investing with my 14yo son and I'd appreciate any thoughts and advice about doing so (but not what funds to invest in, etc). He'll have a small sum to transfer into his JISA from his Childs Trust Fund (thank you Gordon Brown) which may (or may not) go into a single fund and…

FT.com, Vanguard and Microsoft Money
It looks like FT.com and Vanguard have fallen out, and many Vanguard ETFs are no longer shown on the FT Portfolio tool, or indeed anywhere on their site. (e.g. Vanguard FTSE 250 and S&P 500 ETFs) This will be a big annoyance to anyone (like me) who still uses Microsoft Money, and the patch that allows the use of FT's…
