Savings VS. Custodial account?
My father wants to put money every year into an account that my son (currently 4 years old) will use when she turns sixteen to buy a car. 1. By putting the money into the custodial account, does this mean that he will not have to declare any interest income every year on his taxes? 2. What other reasons are there to use a…

Hedging my retirement bets, stakeholder pension or build a portfolio?
Hi all About 13 years ago I kicked off a stakeholder pension when my contract went from fixed term to indefinite. It's a Scottish Widows one with the fund invested in consensus. I've not put a great deal into it (about 30 quid a month) and am 35 this month. I've recently been putting in a 100 quid here and there to try to…

A simple, visual model of 2016/17
Here's an update of last April's posting. Nothing has needed to be corrected, but I've added, in italics, extra steps to take if you're affected by the most common topics raised on MSE in the last year. Draw a, to-scale, vertical column representing your taxable income. The top part of the column is any dividend income,…

Selling/Transferring Fund
Hello, Say that one fund over 5 years is performing badly and or I have a change of direction and want to sell a fund to buy another or transfer. This fund is £10,000 for example. Junior Cash Isa & Adult Cash Isa at same time
The HMRC web site states: "Children aged 16 and 17 can open their own Junior Cash ISA as well as an Adult Cash Isa" One would assume from this that one could fund both!! Many websites (including MSE) quite clearly agree that this anomaly means that in the 2016/2017 tax year a child can save up to a combined total of…

Stewart Investors Asia Pacific Funds
I have noticed that quite a few platforms and indeed IFA's tend to recommend Stewart Investors Asia Pacific LEADERS and I wandered why they do this instead of the other two funds - Stewart Investors Asia Pacific Sustainability and Stewart Investors Asia Pacific. Anybody know why there seems to be a preference for the…

Opening a Post Office Bond
Opening an Online Bond with the Post Office (ie for Bank of Ireland) is very confusing – I tried it 2 days ago. The online instruction you receive confirming the account has been opened is to proceed by posting a personal cheque to a Freepost address in Romford (FREEPOST RSUE-HLBH-LRYR), which I did the same day (for…
