Random Question about Council Pensions and Singles/Couples
Somebody I know is single and has a local council pension - and they had some paperwork, which brought us to question something. Can anybody explain why/say we've got it right: A single person goes to work every day for 45 years for the Council. They retire and get a pension. A married person goes to work every day for 45…

NHS pensions - new and old arrangements
With regard to NHS pensions : when they bring in the new arrangements in which people will have to work until 66 – will this mean the whole pension? Or does it mean that the pension someone has contributed to up until that point will still be paid under the old rules and that the new rules will only apply to the pension…

Army Pension
My father left the army some 15 years ago. I'm not certain if it wasn't voluntary or on medical grounds. When he left he got an intial payment of £43,000 and signed the other £20,000 to follow when he turned 55. He turned 55 back in May and heard nothing. He phoned recently to enquire about it and was told that no such…

Hi all, new user. I'm approaching 50 and I am in the happy position of having a fat final salary pension from a blue chip employer that I can take 25% of and draw on, next year (February). I have a second pension fund which is doing very well (though small, but growing at 9% over the last six months with Skandia) and I am…

Missold Pension?
Can anyone offer some advice please... In 1990 after 15 years service with a well known motor car manufacturer i took redundancy; at that time there were a number of companies that expressed an interest in the company pension that i had...it was in a final salary scheme. It was possible to freeze and leave my pension in…

With Profit Endowment Policy
I would like to warn others against taking out a policy of this type. I have been paying monthly premiums since 1985. My policy is due to mature in 2013. What made this policy worthwhile is not the small sum assured but the revisionary bonuses built up over the years and the promised terminal bonus on maturity. This is now…

I see that Hargreaves Lansdown have a £500+VAT charge for starting flexible drawdown (H-L SIPP charges table). Apologies if this question…

Pension fund size projection
Is there a calculator available to give a pension fund size projected over a period of time, with the ability to input annual growth and increasing annual contributions? A compound interest calculator does not fit the bill. The calculation I need is based on a £75,000 fund size, annual contributions of £16,500 (including…

To pension or not to pension
A classic newbie question - but not one that I can find an answer to within the forums so far. Is having a pension strictly necessary? Pensions and IFAs
I'm currently looking at starting a personal pension and have made an appointment with an IFA. One things is confusing me - if you pay the IFA on a commission basis, what is to stop you merely taking the advice and starting up the pension yourself - thus avoiding the ongoing commission costs??
