16% rates - were they added on to fixed mortgages?
I'm sorry if this is a silly question, I'm just a young'un and don't really know much about what happened in the past with the huge rate hikes under Thatcher. But my dad told me they were on a fixed rate mortgage when it went up, and they owed around £60k or something, then when their rate ended they were told the…

3 or 5 year fixed ?
I'm getting my first mortgage in 10 years, and can have 4.17% fixed for 3 years or 4.99 fixed for 5 years. The gamble it seems to me comes down to what products will be available at the end of the fixed term. I'm worried that the market will be an unpleasant place in 3 years and that 5 is a better idea. But wondered if…

Overpayment v part repayment??
Hi, We've 7 years left on our Mortgage and have been looking to set up a new 5year fixed rate when our current one ends in May. We're happy with the rate offered by our current lender, no set up fees etc so a simple change over. If we change £8000 to repayment (£51600, on interest only at present), this would increase…

A slight disagreement on mortgage arrears
Hi Sorry, this is a bit of a long vent. Summary version: Have I got a hope in hell of getting any joy out of a written complaint to Nationwide about arrears charges that were really my own fault out of ignorance of the rules, but that they let build up for 6 months without contacting me (in fact they never contacted me, I…

Halifax PEP help please.
Hi, first-timer here. I took a 25-year PEP through Halifax in 1997 to cover a mortgage of £33,250, but have received a couple of amber warnings over the last couple of years.
