Double socket in kitchen smelt of fish
Over the last month or so, I noticed a fish smell in the kitchen. Realised the smell only happened when I boiled the kettle. Anyway, I unplugged it and realised that there was a scorch mark on the socket and one of the pins (don't know if that's the right term), on the actual plug, had partly disintegrated. Thought at this…

Central Heating problem..
We have quite a new Vaillant Ecotec Plus condensing boiler and controls. In the morning, the heating and hot water are set to come on at 7.00 a.m. but the hot water doesn't. We have got round this by having the HW on from 6.30 to 7.00 and then the heating comes on. Both work but not together, it seems. Any ideas?

Very thin wall!
Hi I live in a 2 bed flat (only about 10 years old) and I am looking to rent out the second room. The problem being that the wall is so very thin, I think I would feel uncomfortable listening to a stranger snoring, farting, talking on the phone! I don't mind noise, I lived in student houses recently but it's just so thin.…

Advice needed on finding a roofer
A couple of tiles have come off my roof in the recent storms and I'm looking for advice on finding someone to come out and fix the damage. This is my first house and I've no idea how much this should cost or how to find a good roofer. The tiles in question are right at the top of the roof - on the ridge. Does anyone have…

Washing machine noisy - repair or replace?
Hi all, Yesterday after putting a 2nd load of washing in my washing machine went onto fast spin but was making a lot of unhealthy noise. No water puddle or anything that tends to be asymptomatic of washing machine failures. It just sounded like the drum had worked loose or something but didn't sound healthy so I turned it…

Electric Hob Advice Pls
Hi, We have an electric hob - the standard old style one with hotplates. It is in a rented property and we've found that these don't clean well or last well at the best of times and less so with some tenants who don't clear spillages. The rings around a couple of the hotplates have rusted and come away (hob is only 3 yrs…

Pebble dash and damp
We have a 1930s which is coated with pebble dash. If you look at it from the front the dining room/front bedroom section sticks out further forward than the front door/bathroom section by a good metre. Our house is positioned further forward than other properties in the road so our side wall (and this section which sticks…

roof lantern u-values
Hi all, We're about to start (hopefully) building a kitchen extension with bi-fold doors and a large (3x2m) roof lantern. Obviously heat loss is something we are concerned about and want to minimise but in designing it we have been assured that with the best new technology glass, it won't be an issue. What kind of u-values…

Question for woodworkers....
I am looking to undertake minor fettling of some furniture (solid oak) and was looking to purchase a small block plane. I want to ease some doors which stick (and a few other bits and bobs). I have a cabinet scraper (which is great) but was looking to add a small block plane to my collection too. Any thoughts on what plane…

Lavish sofa from DFS / BW Furniture
Hi all, Me and the Mrs have nearly got the keys to our first house and of course she's now very eager (as am I) to start planning what goes inside it. Seems like we've settled on the sofa we like which is the Lavish by DFS (won't let me post a link) The one in the shop is ridiculously comfy, but we'd probably opt for the…

Draughty Porch

Neighbour flushes water into our garden!
To the side of our house are the back gardens of several houses. A three foot path divides their back fences and our side fences. One of the owners is flushing water through a pipe in their rear garden, which then flows over the small path and into our garden. We don’t think it’s from a pond it could well be a hot tub, as…

Kitchen on a budget
I'm starting to make plans for when we get the keys to our new home in about eight weeks time, other than decorating and carpet replacement throughout the biggest job we've got is replacing the current very dated kitchen. My plan is to remove the current kitchen units and appliances completely - decorate all the walls and…

What'd you expect from a 1930s ceiling?
Before anyone responds to just the question in the thread title, please read on... Some of you will know by now we had a fair wet patch on our master bedroom wall from a leaky roof which has apparently been sorted (had a roofer up there who said it's been fixed). The ceiling has been papered & the wooden beam part that…
